‘ Content
and Language Integrated Learning
(CLIL) is a dual-focused educational
approach in which an additional
language is used for the learning and
teaching of both content and
language’.
• According to Marsh (2002), there
should always be a dual focus on
language and content for instruction
to qualify as CLIL, even if the
proportion is 90 per cent versus 10
per cent.
As regards
language policy and implementation, in
2003 the European Commission brought
out an Action Plan for language learning
and linguistic diversity, where CLIL was
encouraged as one of the innovative
methods to improve the quality of
language learning and teaching.
