Life-Saving Appliances

Onboard Ships

An Overview of Essential Safety

Equipment
By: 2/0 Niel Patrick F. Vera Cruz
Introduction
• What are Life-Saving Appliances?

• Definition: Devices and equipment used in

emergencies to save lives at sea.
• Importance: Critical for maritime safety and
compliance with international regulations.
Regulatory Framework
• International Maritime Organization
(IMO)

• - SOLAS Convention: Safety of Life at Sea

• - LSA Code: Life-Saving Appliance Code

• Classification Societies: Role in enforcing

standards
A lifeboat
-is a specially designed boat that is used for rescuing
people from a sinking ship or other dangerous
situations at sea. Lifeboats are typically carried on
ships and are equipped with essential survival gear,
such as food, water, first aid supplies, and
communication equipment. They are constructed to
be sturdy, stable, and capable of withstanding rough
sea conditions. Lifeboats are crucial for ensuring the
safety of passengers and crew in maritime
emergencies.
Lifeboats
• Types of Lifeboats
• - Totally closed, Partially Enclosed, Totally
open life boat.

• - Capacity, Launching Mechanism, Emergency
Supplies
• Maintenance and Inspections
Life rafts
- are equipped with survival supplies such as
food, water, flares, and sometimes a canopy for
protection against the elements. They are generally
used in situations where there isn't enough time or
space to launch a lifeboat or when a smaller, more
portable option is required.

Life jackets

- are commonly used in boating, water sports, and

during water-based activities. They are also required
equipment on ships and airplanes for emergency
situations. Life jackets are designed to keep the
wearer's head above water, allowing them to breathe
even if they are unconscious or unable to swim.
They come in various sizes and types, suited for
different activities and water conditions.
Life Jackets
• Types of Life Jackets
• - Adult, Child, and Infant Life Jackets
• Key Features
• - Buoyancy, Reflective Tape, Whistles
• Proper Usage and Donning Procedures
A life buoy
-also known as a lifebuoy, life ring, or life saver, is a
buoyant, ring-shaped device used for rescuing someone who
has fallen into the water. It is designed to be thrown to a
person in distress to help keep them afloat until they can be
pulled to safety or until additional help arrives.
Life buoys are typically made of durable, water-resistant
materials like plastic or synthetic foam and are often brightly
colored (usually orange) to make them easily visible in the
water. They are commonly found on boats, ships, docks, and
near bodies of water such as swimming pools, lakes, and
beaches. The life buoy usually has a rope attached to it,
allowing the person who threw it to pull the individual to
safety.
Lifebuoys
• Types of Lifebuoys
• - Standard Lifebuoy, Self-igniting, Self-
activating smoke signal
• Deployment Mechanism
• - Positioning on Ship
• - Emergency Deployment Procedures
Emergency Signaling Devices
• Distress Signals

• - Flares, Rockets, Smoke Signals

• - Functionality and Usage

Rescue boats
- are specialized vessels designed for saving people
in distress, particularly in maritime environments.
They are often used by coast guards, search and
rescue teams, and emergency services to reach
people who are stranded, in danger, or involved in
accidents at sea, on lakes, or in other bodies of
water.
Rescue boats are typically fast, agile, and equipped
with various safety and rescue equipment, such as
life jackets, first aid kits, ropes, and communication
devices. They may also have features like reinforced
hulls to handle rough waters, strong engines for
speed, and the ability to carry multiple survivors.
Rescue boats are essential in operations like
evacuating people from sinking ships, responding to
water accidents, or providing assistance during
natural disasters like floods.
Rescue Boats
• Purpose and Types
• - Fast Rescue Boats, Conventional Rescue
Boats
• Key Features
• - Speed, Maneuverability, and Equipment
• Training and Drills
Firefighting equipment
- refers to a range of tools, devices, and protective
gear used to extinguish fires, protect individuals
from fire hazards, and prevent fire-related incidents.
This equipment is essential for both professional
firefighters and general fire safety in homes,
businesses, and public places. Key types of
firefighting equipment include:
Firefighting Equipment
• Types of Fire Extinguishers
• - Water, Foam, CO2, and Dry Chemical
• Fireman’s Outfit
• - Breathing Apparatus, Protective Gear
• Fixed Firefighting Systems
• - Sprinkler Systems, CO2 Flooding Systems
Personal Protective Aids (PPA)
refer to a variety of equipment and devices designed
to protect individuals from hazards that could cause
injury or harm in the workplace, during
emergencies, or in other potentially dangerous
environments. These aids are essential for ensuring
safety and reducing the risk of accidents or exposure
to harmful substances.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Survival Suits
• - Thermal Protection, Buoyancy
• Immersion Suits
• - Cold Water Protection
• Thermal Protective Aids (TPAs)
• - Usage in Emergency Situations
