Piezocone penetration

test
:working principal and
application
Subject : Environmental Geotechnology
Introduction
• Piezocone penetration test is same as
the cone penetration test only
diff erence is here of pore water
pressure. In this test we can measure
the pore water pressure by using the
piezo cone in stand the normal cone.
• There are the two type of piezo cone
are available.
• Type 1 piezocone
• Type 2 piezocone
10 cm^2 piezocone Type 1 Type 2 Type 2
piezocone Piezocone Piezocone
15 cm^2 piezocone

Piezo Cone

• Apex angle : 60 degree

• Porous plate placement
• Porous plate material : Ceramic plate(pore size of 20 to
200micron
polypropylene material disk
• Fluid for saturation : Glycerin or silicone oil
( for deairing and Quick dynamic
response)

• Tip resistance
• Sleeve friction
• Pore water Pressure

• Push rod : 1m length and high tensile strength steel rod

• for 10cm^2 dia cone use 36mm-16mm rod
for 15cm^2 dia cone use 44.5mm outer dia

Procedure of
test
• First with Hydraulic pushing system push
the piezocone in the ground.
• Then rod push at rate of 2cm/s in the
ground by the system. (connection wire)
attach the new rod at the 1m interval.
• As cone goes deep in ground soil give
different resistance value.
• Time of test : 30 min to 3 hours
• Reading : take at 50mm interval (digital:
recorded – non recorded)

Applications
• This method is highly accurate and easy to perform and use in the clay and
sand
• By interpreting the resulting data of this test we can get many soil properties
(relative density, Stiffness, undrained shear strength, friction ratio, soil type,
etc) .
• For the designing of the shallow foundation(unit weight , bearing capacity,
effective stress).
• Liquification evaluation
• Soil profiling of different strata.
• Ground water evaluation
• Seismic analysis of soil (seismic cone penetration test)
• For selecting method for the ground improvement and measure the
improvement.
