PRESSURE EXERTED BY

SOLIDS
Subject Enrichment Activity - 1
WHAT IS PRESSURE EXERTED BY
SOLIDS ?
• Pressure (symbol: p or P) is the force applied perpendicular to the surface of an
solid object per unit area over which that force is distributed .
• It is a measure of how much force is applied over a specific area of a surface.
• Solids exert pressure in the direction of their weight, which is downward, and only
on their base. This is because of the gravitational force or weight of the solid.
• SI Unit of Pressure is Pascal(Pa).
• Formula of Pressure is P = F/A
EFFECTS OF PRESSURE EXERTED
BY SOLIDS ?
• Building and Structures: If high pressure is exerted on the lower
floors or the foundations of buildings and they could not able to
hold it then the building collapse.

• Contact Between Surfaces: When two solid surfaces touch, the

pressure between them creates friction, which can cause wear and
tear.

• High-Pressure Effects: At very high pressures, materials can

change their structure. For example, deep inside the Earth, rocks
are under so much pressure that they change form.
LET’S SEE SOME OF THE FACTORS AFFECTS
PRESSURE IN SOLIDS
• Applied Force: The magnitude and direction of the force applied to a solid directly affect
the pressure.

• Area of Contact: The area over which the force is distributed affects the pressure.

• Temperature: Changes in temperature can affect the pressure within solids. Cooling can
cause contraction and increase internal pressure.

• Material Properties: Different materials respond differently to applied forces due to their
inherent properties such as elasticity, plasticity, and compressibility.

• Load Distribution: How the load is applied, whether it is uniformly distributed or

concentrated at a point, affects the pressure in the solid.
SOME REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS OF
PRESSURE EXERTED BY SOLIDS
• Cutting Tools: Tools like knives, scissors, and blades work effectively because they
exert a high pressure on a small area, allowing them to cut through materials easily.

• Soil Compaction: In agriculture and construction, machines exert pressure on soil

to compact it, which improves its stability and load-bearing capacity.

• Bridges and Dams: Engineers need to understand the pressure exerted by the
materials used in construction to ensure that bridges and dams can withstand the
loads they carry and the forces exerted by water, wind, and traffic.

• Footwear Design: The design of shoes and boots takes into account the pressure
exerted by the wearer’s weight on the soles. This ensures comfort and prevents
injury.
