OBJECTIVE
• Various SEASONAL regimens in diet and
lifestyle as mentioned in the classics
of Ayurveda and their importance on lifestyle
disorders.
DEFINITION OF RITUCHARYA

•Ritu, the season, classified by different features expresses different effects on the
body as well as the environment.
•Ayurveda has depicted various rules and regimens (Charya), regarding diet and
behaviour to acclimatize seasonal enforcement easily without altering body
homeostasis.
•The prime principle of Ayurvedic system of medicine is preventive aspect, can be
achieved by the change in diet and practices in response to change in climatic
condition.
IMPORTANCE OF RITUCHARYA
• Lifestyle disorders are very common in the present
era,
• It basically originate from lack of following seasonal
regimens & due to lack of concentration in seasonal
characteristics.
• Ritucharya is prominently discussed in the first few
chapters of most of the Samhitas of Ayurveda.
• It’s objective is to Prevent from various disease and
to maintain health , which id also one of the
prayojana of Ayurveda (science of life).
SIX SEASONS
DESCRIPTION OF THESE SEASONS
Uttarayana and its effects
• Uttarayana indicates the ascent of the sun or northward movement of
the sun.
• In this period the sun and the wind are powerful.
• The sun takes away the strength of the people and the cooling quality of
the earth.
• It brings increase in the Tikta (bitter), Kashaya (astringent),
and Katu (pungent) Rasa (taste), respectively, which brings about dryness
in the body and reduces the Bala (strength). It is also called Adana Kala.
• According to modern science, this can be compared with the gradual
movement of earth around the sun to the position, in which the rays of
the sun falls perpendicularly at 30 degree meridian of the North Pole on
June 21st every year, called as summer solstice. The northward journey of
the Sun from Tropic of Capricorn to Tropic of Cancer happens.
• During Uttarayana the seasonal changes in
Indian subcontinent is from Shishira (winter)
to Vasanta (spring) and to Grishma (summer).
• The period can be compared to mid-January
to mid-July, when warmness and dryness in
weather increases. It has an overall
debilitating effect on environment, to which
human being is also a part.
Dakshinayana and its effect
• Dakshinayana indicates the descent of the sun or movement of the sun in southern
direction.
• In this period, the wind is not very dry; the moon is more powerful than sun.
• The earth becomes cool due to the clouds, rain, and cold winds. Unctuousness sets
in the atmosphere and Amla (sour), Lavana (salty), and Madhura (sweet) Rasa are
predominant, so the strength of person enhances during this period. It is also
called Visarga Kala.
• According to modern science, this can be compared with the gradual movement of
the earth around the sun to the position, in which the rays of the sun fall over 30
degree meridian of the South Pole perpendicularly on December 21 st every year, is
called as winter solstice. The southward movement of the Sun occurs from Tropic of
Cancer to Tropic of Capricorn.
• During Dakshinayana, the seasonal changes occur in the Indian subcontinent
from Varsha (monsoon) to Sarata (autumn) and to Hemanta (late autumn). This
period can be compared to mid-July to mid-January, when cool sets, and due to
which anabolic activity dominates over the catabolic activity in the environment.
state of strength
• In the beginning of Visarga Kala and ending
of Adana kala, that is,
during Varsha and Grishma, weakness occurs.
• In the middle of the solstices, that is,
during Sharata and Vasanta, strength remains
in moderate grade and in the end of Visarga
Kala and in the beginning of Adana Kala, that
is, during Hemanta and Shishira, maximum
strength is seen
HEMANT AND SISIRA RITU
Hemant ritu recommendations

• Virechana: Removes toxins and keeps your digestive

system happy.

warm herbal oils that are designed to address your
specific dosha’s needs. This therapy can be done by a
practitioner or on your own, and keeps your skin

steam helps you sweat out toxins, release tension, and
help with your circulation. It’s great for keeping warm,
too!
Sisira ritu recommendations

Basant ritu Recommendations

• Nasya: If you’ve ever used a NetiPot, you

might have heard of Nasya. During allergy

respiratory system, including your nasal
passages. Nasya involves clearing out excess
mucus and adding therapeutic oil to keep
things lubricated.
GRISHMA RITU
Recommendations in Greeshma ritu

starting to see a pattern? This season is drying,
so keeping your skin moisturized is a must.
Shirodhara:
• Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing therapy that
involves a steady stream of warm oil that is
poured onto the forehead. This blissful
treatment is perfect for the chaotic state that
fire and air can bring to the mind.
VARSHA RITU
Varsha ritu recommendations
• Panchakarma: Varsha is the perfect time for
Panchakarma, a cleanse that takes you
through five treatments: basti, nasya,
swedana, abhyanga, and snehana.
SHARAD RITU
Sharad ritu
• What to eat
• The goal of this season is to transition smoothly into winter. In order to
cleanse yourself and prep your digestive system for the heavier fare of the
colder months, eat bitter, light, cold, astringent, and sweet foods that are
easy on your stomach, and avoid foods high in fat and salt. The
ideal Sharath diet includes rice, honey, green leafy veggies, tomatoes, root
vegetables, pineapples, berries, plums, ghee (clarified butter), and other
dairy products.
• Recommended Ayurvedic treatments
• Virechana: Virechana purifies the blood by removing toxins from the body
through the gastrointestinal tract. This therapy is essentially an herbal
laxative therapy that clears out your digestive system so that you can enter
the next season refreshed and ready for heavier fare.
According to a 2015 study, the practice of Virechana is effective for reducing
the severity of symptoms associated with this season’s typical imbalances.
• This is the way the ancient sages set up the
regimen for various seasons on analytical
reasoning to obtain Swastha (health) and
prevent the diseases.
Discussion
• A study on animals with seasonal changes revealed
the effects of photoperiod on immune function and
hormone synthesis which influence the development
of opportunistic disease.
• Another study indicated that free-living species from
many regions can seasonally modulate
glucocorticoid release.
• In other words, the magnitudes of both unstressed
and stressed glucocorticoid concentrations change
depending on the time of the year.
Researches
• Malika et al Clinical study shows provocation
of Tridosha with the dominance
of Vata and Kapha provocation. In this study
during Ritusandhi frequently, Jwara, Pratishyaya,
and Alasya Lakshnas were met with.
• In Agnibala also although remarkable changes are seen,
they are not up to pathologic mark. Regarding the
biochemical changes, there is a varied pattern—
sometimes increasing and decreasing, but all these are
within the range of normal variations. The variation in
biochemical values are seen but not remarkable.
• Peoples’ diet changed substantially in the second half
of 20th century, generally with increased consumption
of meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, fruit juice,
and alcoholic beverages, and decreased consumption
of starchy staple foods, such as bread, potatoes, rice,
and maize flour.
• These observations suggest that the diets [or lifestyle]
of different populations might partly determine the
rates of cancer, and other lifestyle disorders, such as
obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, etc.
• All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Max
Hospital shows that the incidence of
hypertension, obesity, and heart disease is
increasing at an alarming rate, especially in
the young, urban population.
• Reason??
• With global warming and variation in the advent
of season, it can surely be a query, of the
importance of Ritucharya in the present scenario.
• It is to be understood that the background on
which Ritucharya is Dosha and Panchamahabhut.
• Although today Ritus do not follow uniformity,
the level of Dosha and Panchamahabhuta can be
analyzed accordingly, to regimen.
Conclusion
• Follow the seasonal regime and stay happy
