SECRET MISSION
• He must get the best education he could find
and answer his life question: What could he
do to help his oppressed Motherland ?
• To observed keenly the life and culture,
languages and customs , industries and
government and laws of the European nations
in order to prepare himself of the mighty task
of liberating his oppressed people from
Spanish tyranny.
Philippines to Singapore
• To avoid detection by the
Spaniards authrities and
friars, Rizal's departure for
Spain was kept secret.

• Rizal left Manila for Singpore on


May 3, 1882, without the knowledge
of his Mother

May 9, 1882 - Salvadora docked at
Singapore
HOTEL DE LA PAZ(SINGAPORE)
• He then stayed at the Hotel
De La Paz for two days and
went on a sightseeing tour of
the city.
• Rizal saw the famous Botanical
garden, the beautiful Buddhist
templates , the busting
shopping district and the
statue of Singapore's founder,
Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles.
FROM SINGAPORE TO COLOMBO

• Rizal transferred to another ship Djemnah , a french


steamer, which left Singapore for Europe on May 11 .
• He found out that his book French which he learned at
the ateneo could not be understood.
• On May 17 , the Djemnah reached Point Galle, Southern
Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
• His travel dairy, he wrote;"The general appearance of
Point Galle is picturesque but lonely and quiet and at
the same time sad".
• The Djemnah weight anchor and resumed the voyage
towards Colombo, the capital of Ceylon .
On May 18 ,1882 :
Djemnah reached;

COLOMBO
Rizal wrote;

"Colombo is more
beautiful, smart
and elegant than
Singapore, Point
Galle, and
Manila".
• Upon his journey, he crossed
the Indian Ocean, Cape of
Guardafui in Africa
("inhospitable but famous")
and had a stopover in the
hot city of Aden Yemen and
saw camels.

• After several weeks, he


docked at Port Said , the
Mediterranean of the Suez
Canal where he went
sightseeing.

NAPLES AND
MARSEILLES
• June 11, 1882 -Rizal reached
Naples (Italy).
• June 12 , 1882 -the steamer
docked at the French harbor of
Marseilles and stayed 2 and half
days .
• He visited the famous Chateau
d'If , where Dantes , hero of the
Count of Monte Cristo was
imprisoned.

• Rizal arrived at Barcelona


in afternoon of June
16 ,1882.

• He viewed Barcelona as
an ugly city but a "City of
freedom and Liberalism"
LAS RAMBLAS
• Rizal enjoyed
promenading down
Barcelona's famous Las
Ramblas Street.
• One of the famous and
iconic boulevards of
Barcelona.

PLAZA DE CATALUNA

• He was welcomed by
his former classmates
in Ateneo and gave him
a party at Plaza de
Cataluna
Rizal wrote his first written article on Spanish soil a
nationalistic essay called "El Amor Patrio" in
Barcelona
• Rizal wrote "Amor Patrio", his first essay written in Spain
under the pen name Laong Laan .
• He sent this article to his friend in Manila , Basilio
Teodoro Moran , a publisher of " Diariong Tagalog".It
was appeared on the said newspaper on August 20,
1882;
• The tagalog text was a tagalog translation made by M.H.
del Pilar.
• Conversely, Moran congratulated Rizal and requested
for more articles that was why he became an essay
writer in "Diariong Tagalog" .
• His next article was entitled "LOS VIAJES" (Travels) and
followed by "REVISTA DE MADRID"(Review of Madrid)
MADRID, SPAIN
Higher Education

• September 02, 1882
• Rizal moved to Madrid in order to continue his
Medical studies.
• Nov. 03, 1882 Rizal enrolled at the Universidad Central
de Madrid in two courses -Medicine and Philosophy in
Letters
• He also studied painting and sculpture in the
academy of Fine arts of San Fernando, to
tutoring lessons in the french , German and
English and practiced fencing and
sharpshooting in the Hall of arms of Sanz y
Carbonel.
• He rigidly budgeted his Money and Time .He
lived frugally spending his money on food ,
clothing, lodging, and books.
• He never wasted a peseta for gambling wine
and women .
• He was awarded the Degree of Licentiate
in Medicine by the Universidad Central
de Madrid on June 21, 1884.
• Next school year , he passed all subjects
leading to Doctor of medicine but did not
present his Thesis at the same year nor
paid the corresponding fees.
• He also finished his degree in Philosophy
and letters.

Manila and Consuelo's fathers.
Rizal was drawn to Consuelo's
beauty and vivacity.Their love did
not blossom because he has still
engaged to Leonor Rivera .
MASONRY

• Joined the Masonic lodge


Acacia in March 1883.
• Become a member of
Gran Oriente Espanol
under the name
"Dimasalang"
• Became a Master Mason
at Logia Solidaridad 53
(1890)
• Became a Master Mason in
1892 by Le Gran Orient de
France .
• Became a worshipful Master
od lodge Nilad No. 42 in 1892
when he delivered a lecture,
"La Masoneria".
• He did not engage in any
Masonic activities except his
writing entitled " Science,
Virtue, and Labor "in Madrid
(1888)
The Propaganda
Movement
• Between1872 and 1892, the Filipino liberals and students
awhi had settled in Europe developed a sense of national
identity.
• The Propagandist, who included upper-class Filipinos, aime
to "awaken the sleeping intellect of the Spaniards to the
needs of our country " and to create a closer , more equal
association between the island and the motherland.
• The most outstanding propagandist was Jose Rizal, a
physician, Scholar, scientists, and writer.
• His greatest contribution to the formation of Filipino
national consciousness, was the publication of two novels ,
Noli Me Tangere (1886) and El Filibusterismo (1891).
Graciano Lopez Jaena -a noted orator and
pamphleteer who had left the island for
spain in 1880 after the publication of his
satirical short novel, Fray Botod(Father
Fatso).In 1889 , he launched La
Solidaridad(Solidarity).

Marcelo H. Del Pilar -a lawyer who


advocates for social change He Became the
Editor of La Solidaridad.
The Circulo Hispano-
Filipino

• Rizal joined the Circulo Hispano Filipino where he


wrote the poem " Me Piden Los Versos".
• On January 29 , 1883 Rizal wrote to his
family :Our society was died .
• Me Piden Versos(They Asked Me for Verse).Rizal
wrote this poem , which he personally declaimed
during the New Year's Eve reception of the
Madrid's Filipino held in the evening of Dec. 31 ,
1882.
• But as Rizal noted in code ,"The majority talk a
lot but when it comes to putting uo money they
back out"
School
Demonstration
• Rizal was also involved in students demonstration
on November 20, 21, and 22, 1884.They were
fighting for Dr. Miguel Morayta , who declared
that "The freedom of Science and the teacher"
should be protected.
• This demonstration was thought to be supported
by the Rector until he was replaced by Dr. Creus .
• Jose Rizal was almost detained by police
authorities .
Financial Problem
His two years in Spain were filled with memories, but
things did not go well in the Philippines. This caused him
financial problem as a result of the low harvest due to
drought and locusts .Aside from these , his family in the
Philippines faced strict Dominican control -due to high
rentals on the lands his family cultivated. His father was
once unable to give a turkey to a hacienda manager
because he feared it would be affected by the locust.As a
result of rhe overcharging of the rentals , Jose Rizal's
allowance was sometimes late .During the day , he
frequently went without eating . Despite this , Jose Rizal
finds a way to earn money by participating in
competitions which he usually wins.
