Source Transformation
Slide 1
Source Transformation
• A source transformation is the process of
replacing a voltage source vs in series with a
resistor R by a current source is in parallel with
a resistor R, or vice versa

• Arrow of the current source
positive terminal of voltage source
• Impossible source Transformation
– ideal voltage source (R = 0)
– ideal current source (R=)
Slide 5
Example 11
• Use source transformation to find vo in the
circuit.

Slide 7
Example 11
we use current division to get

Example 12
• Find vx using source transformation

Slide 10
Example 12
Substituting this into Eq, we obtain
15 5i 3 0 i 4.5A
Alternatively
v x 4i v x 18 0 i 4.5A
thus
v x 3 i 7.5V

Source Transformation
• All current sources or all voltage sources
• Simplify a circuit by allowing resistors and sources to
eventually be combined
• The resistor value does not change during a source
transformation, but it is not the same resistor
• If the voltage or current associated with a resistor is used as a
controlling variable for a dependent source, it should not be
included in any source transformation
• In a source transformation, the head of the current source
arrow corresponds to the “+” terminal of the voltage source
• A source transformation on a current source and resistor
requires that the two elements be in parallel.
• A source transformation on a voltage source and resistor
requires that the two elements be in series
