Methods of Measurement in

Battery Monitoring
We will explore methods used in battery monitoring systems
to accurately assess battery performance and ensure optimal
operation. It includes:
• Voltage Measurement
• Current Measurement
• Temperature Measurement
• State of Charge
• State of Health
• Impedance Measurement
• Integrated Battery Monitoring System (BMS)
Battery Voltage
Measurement
Fundamental Measurement and
Open Circuit Voltage (OCV)
Battery voltage is the potential difference between
its positive and negative terminals. Measuring this
voltage provides insight into the battery's charge
level. Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) is measured when
no current is being drawn from the battery. OCV can
be used to estimate the battery's state of charge
(SOC).

Improved Accuracy Techniques: Advanced

techniques involve using high-precision analog-to-
digital converters (ADCs) and low-noise amplifiers to
improve the accuracy of voltage measurements.
Battery Current
Measurement
Current Flow:
Battery current is the rate of charge flow through the battery's terminals,
charge or discharge.
Shunt Resistor Method: This method uses a shunt resistor in
series with the battery. The voltage drop across the resistor is
measured to calculate the current. This method is highly accurate
and cost-effective.

Hall Effect Sensors: These sensors measure the magnetic field

generated by the current flowing through a conductor. They are non-
intrusive and can measure both AC and DC currents accurately.
Coulomb Counting:
A technique to estimate SOC by integrating the measured current over time.
Temperature Monitoring
Temperature monitoring is critical for preventing thermal runaway and ensuring the
longevity of the battery.

NTC Thermistors: Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors are

commonly used for temperature monitoring. They provide accurate temperature
readings and can be integrated into the Battery Management System (BMS).

Integrated Temperature Sensors: These sensors are embedded within the

battery pack to monitor the temperature of individual cells and the overall pack. They
provide real-time data to the BMS for effective thermal management.

Temperature Estimation Algorithms: Advanced algorithms can estimate the

internal temperature of the battery based on surface temperature measurements and
other parameters, reducing the need for invasive sensors.
State of Charge (SOC) & State of Health

Battery Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)
Impedance
Analysis
A technique that analyzes a battery's impedance response to various frequencies to
determine its internal resistance.
SOH Assessment
Changes in impedance over time can indicate degradation, allowing for early detection of
battery health issues.

Integrated Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS)

Centralized Control
BMSs integrate various monitoring functions into a single system to manage battery
performance and safety.

Data Acquisition and Analysis

BMSs collect data from sensors, analyze it, and make decisions to optimize battery life,
performance, and safety.
