Equations
PROJECTILE MOTION
Projectile motion is the motion of an
object thrown or projected into the air,
subject to only the acceleration of
gravity. The object is called a
projectile, and its path is called its
trajectory .
PROJECTILE MOTION
• Acceleration due to Gravity
(9.8m/s)^2
• Air resistance is negligible
• Horizontal Acceleration is 0
• Horizontal Velocity is Constant
TYPES OF
PROJECTILE MOTION

L AUNCHED L AUNCHED AT AN
HORIZONTALLY ANGLE
LAUNCHED HORIZONTALLY
LAUNCHED HORIZONTALLY
• Time of Flight (t)
• Initial Speed of the Projectile (Vix)
• Horizontal Distance (R)
• Vertical Velocity Just Before Impact
(Vfy)
• Resultant Velocity Just Before Impact
(Vf)
PROBLEM 1
A pool ball leaves a 0.60-meter high
table with an initial horizontal
velocity of 2.4 m/s. Predict the time
required for the pool ball to fall to
the ground and the horizontal
distance between the table's edge
and the ball's landing location.
PROBLEM 2
A soccer ball is kicked horizontally
off a 22.0-meter high hill and lands
a distance of 35.0 meters from the
edge of the hill. Determine the
initial horizontal velocity of the
soccer ball.
PROBLEM 3
A bottle is dropped from a moving airplane
(ignore the eff ect of air resistance). If the plane
from which the bottle was dropped was fl ying at
a height of 500m, and the bottle lands 400m
horizontally from the initial dropping point,
a) how fast was the plane fl ying when the
bottle was released?
b) what was the velocity of the bottle right
before it hit the ground?
LAUNCHED AT AN ANGLE
LAUNCHED AT AN ANGLE
• Time of Flight
• Initial Speed of the Projectile (Vix)
• Horizontal Distance (R)
• Maximum Height (H)
• The Angle at which it was launched
• Vertical Velocity Just Before Impact (Vfy)
• Resultant Velocity Just Before Impact (Vf)
Formulas to be Used
PROBLEM 1
A baseball player leads off the game and
hits along home run. The ball leaves the
bat at an angle of 25degrees with a
velocity of
30m/s.
a. What is the maximum height reached by
the ball?
b. What is the horizontal displacement
(range) of the ball?
PROBLEM 2
A long jumper leaves the ground
with an initial velocity of 12m/s at
an angle of 28degrees above the
horizontal. Determine the time of
fl ight, the horizontal distance, and
the peak height of the long-jumper.
