Introduction
Why learn about EPC TRAFFIC CASES?
› Learning about EPC Traffic Cases is key to
understand EPC system

› Traffic Cases provides a good reference tool when

troubleshooting EPC

› It is key to know Mobility Management procedures,

control and user plane bearers, UE states, etc.

EPC Traffic Cases 2010-03-23

Scope and objectives

Scope

› Describe main EPC Interfaces

› Describe main EPC signalling protocols
› Better understanding of main EPC procedures such
as: attach, handover, etc.

Objectives

› Explain protocols used in EPC

› Describe main EPC interfaces
› Understand how the system works through different traffic cases

EPC Traffic Cases 2010-03-23

> Overview
Epc TRAFFIC CASES

› New Traffic and Signalling Procedures are needed

for new EPC system

› All IP system introduce new signalling protocols

› Convergence to other systems could be

implemented in several ways

Control plane GTPv2-c
› The scope of the GTP Tunnel and the TEID-
C depends on the interface and its functions.
– TEID-C is unique per PDN-Connection on GTP-based S5 and S8.
The same tunnel is shared for the control messages related to all
bearers associated to a PDN-Connection.

– There is only one pair of TEID-C per UE on each of the S3 and S10
interfaces. The same tunnel is shared for the control messages
related to the same UE operation.

– There is only one pair of TEID-C per UE over S11 and S4

interfaces. The same tunnel is shared for control messages related
to the same UE operation.
EPC Traffic Cases 2010-03-23
F-teid
› F-TEID: Fully Qualified Tunnel Endpoint IDentifier
– The F-TEID provides information regarding the IP address and port number
used by the node that provides it.

– i.e. F-TEID : S11 MME GTP-C interface, TEID/GRE Key: 03300103, IPv4
(10.0.2.1). This F-TEID provides:

› The S11 IP address used by the MME to create this tunnel – 10.0.2.1.

› The protocol used is GTP-C (GTPv2).

› The tunnel identifier – 03300103. This tunnel id. Is uniquely associated with the
user that is being handled. From the moment the tunnel is created, any changes
in the activity of the user will have to be handled using this tunnel.

› When Serving-GW receives this information from MME, it will use the IP address
+ tunnel id. to communicate any changes to MME regarding this user.
