GAUGES
 Gauges are inspection tools without a scale which serves to check the
dimensions of the manufactured parts.

LIMIT GAUGING

 Limit gauges ensure the size of the component being inspected lies within its
specified limits. They are non-recording and do not determine the actual size
of the part.
 There are several methods available for the control of dimensions of
components in a system of limits and fits.
 The method of measurement adopted for mass production of parts is called
the system of limit gauging.
29/12/2024 2
 It has an advantage that it can be operated by unskilled persons.
 Instead of measuring actual dimensions, the conformance of the product with
tolerance specifications can be checked by a “GO” and “NOT GO” gauges.
 These gauges represent the limit size of the work piece, as per specified product
tolerances.
 A “GO” gauge represents the maximum material condition of the product (i.e
minimum hole size or maximum shaft size) and conversely , a “NOT GO” gauge
represents the minimum material limit. (i.e. maximum hole size, or minimum shaft
size).

TYPES OF LIMIT GAUGING

General classification of limit gauges are as follows:

1. According to the type
a) Standard gauges
b) Limit gauges
2. According to the purpose
a) Workshop gauges
b) Inspection gauges
c) Reference gauges

3. According to the type of surface to be tested
a) Plug gauges for checking holes
b) Snap and ring gauges for checking shafts
4. According to their design
a) Single and double limit gauges
b) Single and double ended gauges
c) Fixed and adjustable gauges

PLUG GAUGES

 These are limit gauges for a hole.

 It consists of cylindrical wear resisting steel plugs whose sizes are made to the
limiting values of the hole dimension.
 The plug made to the lower limit of the hole is known as ‘GO’ gauge .
 GO gauges enter any hole which is not smaller than the lower limit allowed.
 The plug made to the upper limit of the hole is known as ‘NOT GO’ gauge
“NO-GO” gauge.

 NOT GO gauges will not enter any hole which is smaller than the upper
limit allowed.
 GO and NOT GO plugs are arranged at either end of the common handle.

RING GAUGES

 Ring gauges are limit gauges for gauging shafts and are used in a similar
manner to that of GO and NOT GO plug gauges.
 It consists of a piece of metal in which a hole of the required size is bored
as shown in fig.

SNAP GAUGES OR GAP GAUGES

 Consists of a plate or frame with a parallel faced gap of the required

dimension as shown in fig.
 Gauging anvils can be adjusted endwise to suit any particular limit
dimension required.
 Used for both cylindrical as well as non cylindrical work.

TAYLOR’S PRINCIPLE OF GAUGE DESIGN

It states that -
1. GO gauges should be designed to check the maximum material limit
while the NOT GO gauges should be designed to check the minimum
material limit.

29/12/2024 15
It states that
2.GO gauges should check all the related dimensions(roundness, size,
location etc.) simultaneously whereas “NOT-GO” gauge should check only
one element of the dimensions at a time.

29/12/2024 16
29/12/2024 17
 According to this rule, GO plug gauge should have a full circular section
and be of full length of the hole it has to check.
 This ensures that any lack of straightness, or, roundness of the hole will
prevent the entry of full length GO plug gauge.
 If this condition is not fulfilled, the inspection of the part with the gauge
may give wrong results.
 Examples: 1. Checking the bush with curved axis
2. The hole to be checked has an oval shape

29/12/2024 18
 Plug gauges are used to check the hole, therefore the size of the GO plug gauge
should correspond to the low limit of hole , while that of NOT-GO plug gauge
corresponds to the high limit of hole.
 GO snap gauge on the other hand corresponds to the high limit of the shaft, while
‘NOT –GO’ snap gauge corresponds to the low limit of shaft.
 The difference in size between the GO and NOT GO plug gauges, as well as the
difference in size between GO and NOT-GO snap gauge is approximately equal to
the tolerance of the tested hole or shaft in case of standard gauges.

GUAGE TOLERANCE(Manufacturing tolerance)

 Gauges like any other job requires manufacturing tolerance.

 Theoretical size of the gauges is determined from maximum and minimum
limit.
 The tolerance on the gauges allowed for the workmanship of a gauge maker is
known as “Gauge Tolerance”
 Generally the gauge tolerance will be 1/10th of the work tolerance.
