Definition of function
A function f is a rule that assigns to each
element x in a set D exactly one element,
called f(x), in a set E.
• x: independent variable
• f(x): dependent variable
• The set D is called the domain of the function
• The number f(x) is the value of f at x and is read
"f of x."
• The range of is the set of all possible values of
as x varies throughout the domain

The graph of a function is a curve in the xy-plane. But the question
arises: Which curves in the xy-plane are graphs of functions?

Vertical line test
vertical
line Definition: A curve in the xy-
plane is the graph of a
function of x if and only if no
vertical line intersects the
curve more than once.
domain and range
We usually consider functions for
which the sets D and E are sets of real
numbers.
• The set D is called the domain of
the function. The number f(x) is the
value of f at x and is read "f of x."
• The range of f is the set of all
possible values of f(x) as x varies
Each arrow connects an element of D throughout the domain.
to an element of E. The arrow
indicates that f(x) is associated with
x, f(a) is associated with a, and so on.

One-to-one function
Definition: A function with domain A is called a
one-to-one
function if no two elements of A have the same
image
A function is one-to-one if and only if no
horizontal line
intersects its graph more than once
inverse function
• Definition: Let f and g be two functions such that
(g(x)) = x for every x in the domain of g and g(f (x))
= x for every x in the domain of f.
• The function g is the inverse function of the
function f.
• the function g is denoted by f⁻¹ ( read “-inverse”).
So, f(f⁻¹(x))=x and f⁻¹(f(x))=x
• the domain f of must be equal to the range of f⁻¹
and the range of f must be equal to the domain of
f⁻¹
finding inverse function

• Finding inverse functions Graphically

• Finding inverse functions Algebraically
finding inverse function
graphically
finding inverse function algebraically
• Use the Horizontal Line Test to decide whether f has an
inverse function
• In the equation for f(x), replace f(x) by y
• Interchange the roles of x and y and solve for y
• Replace y by f⁻¹(x) in new equation
• Verify that f and f⁻¹ are inverse funtions of each other by
showing that the domain of f is equal to the range of f⁻¹, the
range of f is equal to the domain of f⁻¹
finding inverse function algebraically
example f(x): y=x+4
define y=x+4 is one-to-one function by
horizontal line test y=x+4 =>x=y-4
switch x and y
position
=> f⁻¹(x)y=x-4 is
inverse function
