INTRODUCTION
• Solar grass cutter is an innovative and eco-friendly device designed to efficiently
trim and maintain grassy areas using solar energy as its power source.

• Solar energy is a renewable energy source. So it is easily available and cost-

effective.
• In this the solar energy is converted to electrical energy using solar panel to drive a
cutting mechanism.

• The solar grass cutters are often used in environmentally sensitive areas.

• They offer a sustainable and low maintenance cost.

SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW

• Based on our references of various literature reviews, we have decided to design

and fabricate a grass cutter powered by solar energy.

• The performance of solar powered grass cutter with automatic and conventional
grass cutter is compared and various limitations were analysed.

• Automatic grass cutters requires more power and is also costly and conventional
grass cutters that runs on fuel produces pollution.

• So we have decided to choose solar powered grass cutter so that it produces less

pollution and also uses a renewable energy source for its operation.
SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW

• The values of voltage and current of solar panel is determined.

• The Solar panel gives maximum output when it is placed inclined at 20 degrees.

• The Solar Grass Cutter uses a 12 V DC Motor which produces 7000 rpm and 18W
power and 12 V Battery.

• The AMPS (Ampere Seconds) usage of battery is calculated.

• The frame is made of galvanized iron square tube.

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED
 Automatic solar grass cutter requires more power than manual grass cutter.
So it requires sensors, complex circuits and solar panel with more capacity ,
which increases the production cost.

 By using conventional grass cutter :

 The combustion of fossil fuel results in emission of toxic gases.

 Causes noise pollution.

 Due to high vibration will induces to hand disorder.

OBJECTIVE

 To built a solar grass cutter with ;

 Low maintenance cost .
 To eliminate the emission of toxic gases .
 To reduce noise pollution.

DESIGN CALCULATIONS
• Selection of electric motor
DC Motor speed (N) =7000rpm
Voltage (V) =12V
Power(P) =18W
• Torque of the motor
Torque(T) = (P x 60) /(2 x 3.14 x N)
= (18 x 60) /(2 x 3.14 x 7000)
= 0.02456 Nm =24.56 Nmm
•Electrical power equation
Power = V x I
where , V = 12 V
P = 18W
I = P/V =18/12 =1.5A
• Solar panel calculation
V= 12 V
P = 20 W
I=P/V
= 20 / 12
= 1.66 A
• Solar panel dimension is 430 x 665 x 35 mm.
• 2 x 2cm MS square pipe is used for constructing the frame.
• Maximum efficiency of solar panel = ( panel power (kW) ) / ( Panel length x
panel width(m) )
= (55/1000) / (0.430x0.665)
= 0.198 = 19.8%
PROCEDURE

• The components used and specifications ;

Solar panel (18-20 W)
DC motor ( 7000 RPM)
GI square tube ( 2*2cm )
Battery (12V)
wheels
Solar charge controller
Steel trimmer line(steel wire inside a normal Nylon wire)
• Choose a solar panel with a capacity of 55 W to generate power for the
grass cutter.

• Select a DC motor with a speed range of 7000 RPM suitable for driving
the grass cutter mechanism.

• Utilize GI square tubes(2x2 cm) and to construct a sturdy frame for the
solar grass cutter.

• Attach wheels to the frame to provide mobility and ease of movement for
the grass cutter.

• Mount the solar panel securely on the frame (Little inclined), optimizing
its exposure to sunlight for efficient energy harvesting.
• Integrate a 12V battery to store solar energy with a solar charge controller

to ensure continuous operation, especially during low-light conditions.

• Implement a cutting mechanism using steel trimmer line, ensuring it's

securely attached and aligned with the DC motor for effective cutting.

• Connect the solar panel, DC motor, and battery with appropriate wiring,
incorporating necessary circuitry for power management and control.

• Then provide a on off switch.

• Conduct thorough testing to ensure the reliability, efficiency, and safety of

the solar-powered grass cutter.
• Gather feedback and make necessary improvements through iterative
design.

• Create comprehensive documentation outlining the assembly, operation,

and maintenance of the solar grass cutter.

DIMENSIONS OF FRAME
As per the design the frame of the solar grass cutter is welded and wheels are
fixed with the frame.
The solar panel is attached to the frame by drilling and using thread of Diameter
8mm .

Then motor is clamped to the bottom end of the frame (the height of motor is
adjustable).
• Then the solar charge controller is drilled to frame and battery is tied using wire
tag and circuits are connected using 4 mm wire.
 After completing the connection ;
CONCLUSION
• The stress analysis of the design of our machine was performed using SolidWorks
software.

• The analysis provides details about the magnitude of stress acting on our machine

according to the load of machine components.

• It also provides information about the maximum and minimum stress acting on
our machine and areas where our design could fail.

• Maximum stress induced = 2.537 Mpa

• Minimum stress induced = 3.939 e-07 MPa
