Laboratory Planning, Construction and

Layout

Course code: LLP 110

Course Instructor: Dr. Nelson
Course contents
 Planning:
 Discussions with the architect on various issues related to the
drawing of the building plans for the laboratory construction.
 The appropriateness of the intended construction site.
 The landscaping of the site with respect to the East/West and
North/South directions as they relate to the natural elements in
the area such as earthquakes, floods, general wind and
sunlight/sunshine, etc.
 Directions as they will affect the use and longevity of the
laboratory.
Course contents…
 The internal construction of the Lab:
 Guide the architect on the internal construction requirements for
gas, water, and electricity installations.
 Positioning, length, width, and height of working surfaces and the
materials to be used.
 Construction of drawers and cupboards and installation of
hoods/fume chambers and other specialized requirements.
 The need and size of supportive rooms including stores, preparation
rooms, offices for technical staff and, where necessary, offices for
academic staff.
Course contents…
 Lab Layout:
 Participation in determining the appropriate layout of the
equipment and apparatus in the laboratory as related to the
original planned construction.

Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives

 Be comfortable in the laboratory environment

 Understand the primary functions of clinical laboratories.

 ldentify various departments within the hospital laboratory.

 Be aware of the interrelationships of laboratory departments

including the flow of information and its impact on patient
care.
Learning Objectives…
 Know the key personnel
 Who are the key players within the hospital and laboratory
staff?

 What is the laboratory personnel chain of command?

 Who should you make initial contact with and, in the event
that you are unable to do so, who is your next best option?
Learning Objectives…
 Understand the laboratory workflow
 Understand the flow of specimens throughout workstations and
how to best optimize individual laboratory workflow patterns.

 Include mobile and reconfigurable products to better optimize

traffic flows.

 Consider the volume of labor performed at various workstations

to ensure both ergonomic and durable casework configurations.
Learning Objectives…
 Be able to fill out the "Basic Information" sheet
 Provide the facility's initial needs assessment.

 Establish design requirements for any work areas yet to be

built.

 Consider the square footage of rooms and consider hardware,

machinery, and additional design constraints including
structural impediments.
Learning Objectives…
Be able to provide product-specific designs
 Specify appropriate finishes and materials based on the nature
of work being performed on a daily basis.

 Include integration of any plumbing, electrical, gas, or data

utilities.

 Consider future trends in both technology and clinical research

to ensure long-term casework design effectiveness.
