Objective
To determine students schemata about citizenship awareness of issues involved in
citizenship.
At the end of the presentation the students should be able to:

A citizen is a native or a naturalized member of a country, who owes
allegiance and loyalty to that country and who is entitled to protection
from the government of the country.
OR
A citizen is a native or inhabitant of a country, town or city.
How can one become a citizen?
An individual can become a citizen by:
1. Birth
2. Naturalization
What is Naturalization?
A naturalized citizen is one who was a citizen in one country but whose
application for citizenship in another country was successful.
For Example: Carlo was born in Italy. Carlo’s parents are U.S citizens and want
Carlo to come and live with them. So they filed for him. Now Carlo is living in the
U.S with his parents. Carlo is now naturalized citizen in the U.S because his
parents did what was required of them for him to become a U.S citizen.
What is Citizenship?
Citizenship is the legal status of a person in a particular country.
Rights of a citizen
Rights are legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement. Rights are the fundamental normative rules
about what is allowed of people or owed to people according to some legal system. (These are the things that
people are entitled to in a country)
Rights of a Citizen
1. The right of the individual to life , liberty, security of the person and enjoyment of property and the right not to be
deprived thereof, exception by due process of law.
3. Freedom of movement
The right of the individual to respect for his private and family life
The right of the individual to equality of treatment from any public authority in exercise
of any functions.
Responsibilities/ Duties of a
Citizen
What is a duty?
A duty is a commitment or expectation to perform some action in general or if certain
circumstances arise.
Duties of a Citizen
1. To obey and act in the spirit of the constitution and the laws of the land
2. To protect the state and safeguard its resources and wealth and promote their development
3. To work according to capacity in useful employment, creating for himself opportunities such
as labour
4. To respect the rights and freedom of other persons without regard to race, sex or creed
5. Stay informed about issues affecting the community
6. Take responsibility for your own action
Assignment
Each student will write a short reflection on three (3) ways in which he/ she
can become an active responsible citizen in his or her community.
