WEEK 3 - types of computer
Look at the pictures carefully, try to differentiate them using the table.
STORAGE
AT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF A COMPU
SUPERCOMPUTER
• It is the fastest and very expensive
types of computer.
• Generally occupies one floor of a
building to install all the nodes or
components of the computer.
• It has a performance rate of
TERAFLOPS or trillion of FLOPS.
• Uses- weather forecasting,
creating animated graphics, fluid
dynamic calculations, nuclear
FLOPS- Floating Point energy research and petroleum
exploration.
Operations per Second
MAINFRAME COMPUTER
• Very large and expensive computer
capable of supporting hundreds or
even thousand of users
simultaneously..
• They are as large as the size of the
room of a building.
• It has a performance rate of
GIGAFLOPS or billion of FLOPS.
• Uses- mainly used for banking
transaction processing, ATM
processing and large programs
which runs for months.
• It uses its power to execute
many programs at the same
MINICOMPUTER
• It is a middle-sized computer in terms of
size power. It is faster and has a greater
capacity than a microcomputer but
slower and less capacity than a
mainframe.
• It is typically the size and shape of a
closet, mounted in a single track.
• It has a performance rate of
MEGAFLOPS or million of FLOPS.
• Uses- multiprocessing system capable of
supporting atleast 200 users
simultaneously.
• NOTE: IT IS MERELY OBSOLETE.
MICROCOMPUTER
• Synonym for personal computer or PC
which is designed for an individual. It has a
MICROPROCESSOR CHIP called CPU.
• It can be as small as a regular typewriter
that can be placed on a desk or on a
person’s lap.
• It has a a clock rate from 8MHz to 3 GHz.
• Uses- word processing, accounting,
desktop publishing, surfing the web,
database management editing
photographs, creating graphics and playing
music or games.
• NOTE: it is now the latest version of
computer used at home, school and
EMBEDDED COMPUTER
• It contain microprocessor chips that
made them as special-purpose
computers.
• Are computers integrated into the design
of the device and run programs to control
the equipment and optimize their
performance.
• EXAMPLES: calculators, TV, remote
controls, TVs and microwaves
