Lesson 2:

MODELS OF
COMMUNICATION
Prepared by:
Sir Herbert
THE THREE TYPES OF
COMMUNICATION MODEL

01 Linear Model
Interactive
02 Model
Transactional
03 Model
1. LINEAR MODEL
 This model shows a straight path of relaying
information. It is one-directional, which means
that information from a sender is conveyed
directly to the receiver.
According to Aristotle, linear model is speaker centered
since the speaker has the most important role in it and it is
the only one active.

Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver introduced an

important concept in this model; noise or barriers to
effective communication.

David Berlo identified the four key elements: the source

or sender, the message, the channel and the receiver.
BERLO’S SMCR MODEL
OF COMMUNICATION
ADVANTAGES OF LINEAR MODEL

 Good at Audience persuasion

 There are intentional results

 Used in mass communication

DISADVANTAGES OF LINEAR MODEL
 There is no feedback

 Communication is not continuous

 Not interactive

 Difficult to identify if communication is

effective
2. INTERACTIVE MODEL
 The message in this model comes from two sources: the
message from the sender and the feedback from the
receiver. When the receiver gives feedback, he or she
becomes the sender, and the original sender becomes the
receiver of the feedback.

 This model was introduced by Wilbur Schramm in 1954.

He also took into account the:

1. Context – refers to the setting in which the communication

situation takes place.
2. Fields of Experience – refer to the cultural background
and other frames of reference that and individual may bring
into the interaction.
3. Give-take-give interaction. It is not linear but circular
ADVANTAGES OF
INTERACTIVE MODEL
 There is feedback even in mass
communication

 New communication channels

DISADVANTAGES OF
INTERACTIVE MODEL

 Feedback is delayed

 The sender and receiver might not know

who the other person is.
3. TRANSACTIONAL MODEL
 This model was developed by Dean Barnlund in 1970.

 Shows communication as occurring continuously and

simultaneously between or among people.

 It shows communication as a two-way process in which

participants are constantly sending and receiving
message.

 Noise is more than just something taking place in the

channel instead, it could be found in any part of the
process such as source, message, etc.
TRANSACTIONAL MODEL
ADVANTAGES OF
TRANSACTIONAL MODEL

 Simultaneous and instant feedback

 Sender and Receiver play the same role

DISADVANTAGES OF
TRANSACTIONAL MODEL

 Encourages Non-Verbal communication

 More noise due to communicators talking

at the same time
