GENDER

NORMS IN
CANADAS
EDUCATIO
N SYSTEM
WHAT CHALLENGES
AFFECTING GENDER
NORMS, WERE FOUND
THROUGH
GENERATIONS IN
CANADA'S EDUCATION
SYSTEM ?
ARE • Yes, at a young age in school we are taught
GENDER that men are stronger, and woman are
NORMS
weaker, boys get trucks and girls get dolls
STILL IN
THE etc. This can be very problematic because it
EDUCATION promotes toxic masculinity (a cultural
SYSTEM? concept of manliness that glorifies stoicism,
strength, virility, and dominance, and that
could be harmful to people's mental health).
This can also result in people that are
transgender experiencing gender dysphoria
( feeling one's emotional and psychological
identity to be at variance with one's birth
sex.)
WHAT ARE
GENDER
NORMS?
• how males and
females should
behave in a way
that a group,
community or
culture considers to
be acceptable and
conforms to
expectations for that
gender.
WHAT IS • There is not really a difference
THE
DIFFERENCE other that one revolves around
BETWEEN
GENDER
solely gender and people's beliefs
NORMS AND around it.
SOCIAL
NORMS?
WHAT IS • measures how social beliefs
GENDER
SOCIAL obstruct gender equality

ARE GENDER
NORMS
CHANGING
• Norms are changing,
but slowly and
incremental. As a result,
women, as well as men,
get excluded from
opportunities because it
was seen as gender-
inappropriate.

dresses/skirts
• No pink girl bathrooms
• No blue boy bathrooms
• Co-ed bathroom
• there is no gender to clothing
BABY • Woman wearing pants
BOOMERS
• Woman going bra less
• Woman Showing leg
• Men wearing necklaces
• Men wearing rings
• Long hair on men
• Dancing as groups of one gender
SIMILARITY' • Girls are expected to do less in athletic
S situations
(THINGS
THAT ARE • Woman are expected to wear more
STILL THE clothing
SAME)
• Dominantly woman move out of the way
for men
• Shamed for teen pregnancy
• Girls wear feminine things
• Boys wear masculine things
• Separated in gym where boys do one
thing and girls do something "easier".
BABY BOOMERS AND GEN Z

• Although, things have changed in our generation, there is still many people
that dislike the idea of change and how fast it happens. Change is absolute
which means both for baby boomers and Generation Z were affected.
• In baby boomers' generation it was considered dangerous if you went against
gender norms by extreme measure. If one were to disagree with the change
of gender norms and take on an activist role it often led to criminal
repercussions. In some cases, led to physical harm to one or both parties
involved. Emotionally or physically abuse were, in one way or another, an
absolute. Baby boomers and generation z have been instrumental in this
generations outlook on current gender norms. Our generation is further ahead
because of the groundwork done by previous generations.
