Brain Teaser
• I’m the part of a sentence that tells what it’s
about. Sometimes I’m just one word, and
sometimes I have company. What am I?

What Are Subjects and Predicates?
• Example: My best friend bought a car
yesterday.

• - Simple Subject: friend


• - Complete Subject: My best friend
• - Simple Predicate: bought
• - Complete Predicate: bought a car yesterday
Example Sentence
• Sentence: The city council voted to pass the
law.

• - Simple Subject: council


• - Complete Subject: The city council
• - Simple Predicate: voted
• - Complete Predicate: voted to pass the law
How to Identify Subjects
• 1. Find the verb (the action or state of being).
• 2. Ask 'Who or what is performing the action?'
– That’s the Simple Subject.
• 3. Include any words describing the subject to
find the Complete Subject.

• Examples:
• 1. My friend Tiffany plays tennis on Saturdays.
• - Simple Subject: Tiffany
How to Identify Predicates
• 1. Locate the verb or verb phrase – This is the
Simple Predicate.
• 2. Include all words related to the verb for the
Complete Predicate.

• Examples:
• 1. My aunt has two grown children.
• - Simple Predicate: has
• - Complete Predicate: has two grown
Practice Time (Part A)
• Identifying Simple and Complete Subjects:
• 1. My basketball shoes got left at school.
• 2. The mayor’s office is next to a restaurant.
• 3. The fourth house on our block is empty.
Practice Time (Part B)
• Identifying Simple and Complete Predicates:
• 1. They raise goats on their land.
• 2. My friend helps me with my English
homework.
• 3. The first assignment is the hardest one.
Application Activity
• 1. Write 2-3 sentences about a topic you’re
interested in.
• 2. Share with a partner.
• 3. Partner identifies the complete subject and
complete predicate in each sentence.
• 4. Switch roles.
