WELDING

ESSENTIAL
S
Rogelio M.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students
are able to;
a) identify the different Welding Essentials
b) appreciate the importance of Welding essentials
c) apply welding essentials in performing fillet welds
in accordance with the industry standards
WHAT ARE ESSENTIALS OF
WELDING
Weld quality and weld metal
deposition are both influenced by
the various welding parameters.
These parameters are, welding
current, arc voltage, welding speed,
electrode feed speed, electrode
extension, electrode diameter,
electrode orientation, electrode
polarity, shielding gas composition.
WHAT IS C L A M S
C urrent Setting
L ength of Arc
A ngle of Electrode
M anipulation of the electrode
S peed of travel
What is Current
Setting?
Correct current/amperage
setting depends on the
diameter and type of
electrode. Amperage generally
dictates the size and
penetration of a weld bead
when you’re moving your
LENGHT OF ARC
Length of arc should not
exceed the diameter the
diameter of the metal
portion (core) of the
electrode.
ANGLE OF ELECTRODE
Hold the electrode
perpendicular to the joint,
and then tilt the
direction of travel
approximately 5 to 15
degrees.
ANGLE OF ELECTRODE

There are two torch angles to remember

when welding;

1.Work angle
2.Travel angle
MANIPULATION OF
ELECTRODE

This refers to the movement of the welder’s

hand as they guide the electrode along the
joint.
Achieving tie-in at the toes is paramount,
but it’s also important to control penetration
SPEED OF TRAVEL
Travel speed is independent of
current and voltage and may
be controlled by the welder or
mechanized.
SPEED OF TRAVEL
If you move too fast, the size of
the weld will be small and
achieve insufficient penetration
Move too slow, and you’ll end up
with a fat weld bead and likely
too much heat going into your
work plates.
