LESSON 1
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students
will be able to:
•Define what computer is.
•Identify the different classifications
of a computer.
WHAT IS A COMPUTER?
COMPUTERS are basically any form
of electronic device that manipulates
information or data. It is a device that
can be instructed to carry out the
sequence of arithmetic or logical
operations automatically via
computer programming. It has the
ability to accept data from the user
(input), process and store data
CLASSIFICATION OF
COMPUTERS
HANDHELD COMPUTERS
Are the smallest computers that are
designed to fit into one hand or palm
that is why they are also called palm top
computers. These computers may
combine pen input, personal organizer
tools and communication capabilities
such as telephone and internet
applications. PDA (Personal Digital
Assistant) is the most common palm
computers.
MICROCOMPUTERS
Also known as Desktop Computers
are the most common and widely
used computers today which you
can see in homes, schools and in
most businesses. There are two
types of microcomputers - desktop
and notebook computer.
MID-RANGE COMPUTERS
Are used by medium size companies for
specific purposes. They maybe used for
certain assembly line operations or
manufacturing stages in big companies.
The size of mid-range computers may
be as big as a washing machine. They
may be a stand-alone system for
specialized applications including
network servers.
SUPERCOMPUTERS
Are the most powerful computer
available. These high capacity
computers that run continuously are
being used by a very large
organizations, mostly big
corporations and government
institutions. User of supercomputers
include NASA and the USA
Government.
MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
Are less powerful than supercomputers
but are capable of great processing
speed, multi-tasking capability, and high
data storage. They are usually used by
banks and insurance companies to
process information of depositors, million
of daily bank transactions, and policy
holder. These computers a specialized
wiring system and usually occupy a large
temperature room.
LESSON 2
ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER SYSTEM
A computer is an electronic device
that performs tasks based on
instructions given by the user. The
computer system works starting with
the data entered by the user, then the
computer processes the data and
produces the output.
1. PEOPLEWARE
•People are the most important part of
computer system. It is the people or the end
user like you and me, who will operate,
input data, and use the resulting information
to our personal and business lives to be
productive and make effective decisions.
2. HARDWARE
Hardware- It is the collection of physical
components that constitute a computer
system. Computer hardware is the physical
part or components of a computer, such as a
monitor keyboard, computer data storage,
graphics card, all of which are tangible
components.
3. SOFTWARE
Software is a collection of data or
computer instructions that tell the
computer how to work. It is a set of
programs, procedures, algorithms, and
its documentation concerned with the
operation of a data processing system.
