HOW DO YOU BEST?
A learning style refers to an individual's method of making
sense of new material, commonly done through sight, touch
and sound.
We receive information through our five senses which is then
sent to our brains. We communicate trough movements,
gestures, speech and writing. Our learning style depends on the
way our brain receive and send information.
We all have three learning abilities which are:
• Visual- “seeing”
• Auditory-”listening”
• Kinasthetic- “moving”
Visual learning refers to one of the learning styles where a person
needs to see something they’re learning about to understand it.
Characteristics
• Remember the past easily
• Don’t like making eye contact
• Remember and describe using color and shapes
• Notice colors and the beauty of the environment
• Good sense of direction and don’t often get lost
• See things in their mind
• Prefer to learn from note taking and diagrams
• Good at reading facial expressions and body
A visual learner learns best through seeing, writing their work
down, reading their notes often and drawing pictures.
Auditory learning-A learning style where by an individual or a person learns best
by listening.
Characteristics
• Hears to learn
• Learn by talking to themselves
• Battle to make decisions
• Relax by listening to music
• A good listener
• Can follow instructions easily
• Prefer to learn from talks and lectures
• Speak clearly and evenly
• Struggles to interpret diagrams
• Talk to themselves when trying to work out something
Auditory learn best through listening, talking and discussing with
friends and family.
Kinesthetic- a learning style in which individuals learn best
through physical activities such as touching, moving, or
performing hands-on tasks.

Move a lot while studying
Like to participate in learning
Like to do things rather than read about them
Do not prefer reading
Do not spell well
Enjoy problem solving by doing
Likes to try new things
Talk with hands or gestures
Fidgets a lot
Like to touch objects
Is it important to understand your
learning style?
When you have identified your personal preference you can
develop and apply study methods to suite your learning style.
When you’re taught using a method that aligns with your own
learning style, you’ll tend to understand the material better and
retain the information for a longer period of time. This leads to
better performance, increased motivation and even higher
confidence levels.
When you know your learning style you will have the ability to
improve your learning experience, knowledge and skillset.
understanding your preferred learning style alleviates revision
anxiety, and accelerates your progress.
Task
1. Explain what a learning style is.
2. For each of the following statements on learning styles state weather they are visual,
auditory or kinesthetic.
a) I clap my hands while I learn.
b) I learn by drawing and making charts.
c) I make mind maps and graphs in color and with my own symbols.
d) I record myself reading my notes and then listen to them.
e) I make a movie in my head of what it must have been like.
f) I knead a stress ball in my hand while learning.
g) I use rap to summarize something.
1. Your friend who is in grade 8 is preparing for her end of year term exams, she has not yet
mastered her learning and her previous term results were unsatisfactory or not good.
Write a paragraph explaining the importance of understanding your learning style.
