Parts of a Computer

different parts

Case

A computer case holds


and protects all the hardware
that makes up a computer.
It is sometimes called a
computer tower.
Monitor

A monitor looks a bit like a


TV screen. It is an output
device.
It displays text, images and
video.
Mouse

A mouse is an input device. It


is used to point to or
manipulate objects on a
monitor. It has a left button
and a right button.
A mouse often has a wheel in
the middle which can be used
to scroll up and down a page.
Keyboard

A keyboard is an input device that allows letters,


numbers and symbols to be typed into a computer.
Speakers

Speakers are output devices that can connect


to a device and produce sound.
Webcam

A webcam is a web camera.


It can sit on top of or beside a
computer. Some webcams are
built into a computer monitor.
A webcam captures a video
image
of the view in front of it.
Webcams are useful for video
meetings.
Printer

A printer is a peripheral.
It is an output device that
takes the digital data from
a computer and prints a
copy onto paper.
Router

Routers are small computers that communicate between


the Internet and devices that connect to the Internet.

Inside a Computer
There are also lots
of different
components inside a
computer. They are
essential in helping a
computer run.
Motherboard

The motherboard is a circuit


board. It holds everything in
place and has slots so that
other components can be
installed.
Central
Processing Unit
(CPU)

The CPU is often referred to as


the processor or the
microprocessor.
It is the ‘brains’ of the
computer.
Hard Disk Drive
(HDD or HD)
The hard drive is sometimes
called the hard disk drive
(HDD). The HD stores data
permanently (unless the user
deletes it), even when a
computer is switched off. It
can
store software data, text
documents, photos and music
files.
Graphics
Processing Unit
(GPU)

The GPU is a processor.


It is responsible for helping
to create the images and
videos shown on a monitor.
Sound Card

A sound card, sometimes


called an audio card, sends
and receives audio signals. It
translates digital code into
analogue sounds that can be
heard through computer
speakers.
