Grade 7

Unit 11:
Motion and Velocity

Science
Lesson 1

Distance, Displacement,
Speed, and Velocity

Science
Introduction

Have you ever wondered how your favorite video game

characters move from one place to another so quickly?
Introduction

Just like in real life, video games use principles of motion

such as distance, displacement, speed, and velocity. By
understanding these concepts, we can figure out not only
how to get to places faster, but also how to solve mysteries
in games and real-world problems.
Essential Question

How can understanding motion and its principles help us solve

practical problems and improve various aspects of everyday life,
from transportation to sports and entertainment?
Learn about It

Distance and
Displacement
● Distance: total path
length traveled by an
object
● Displacement: straight-
line distance from your
starting point to your
ending point, along with
the direction of that line.
Learn about It

Speed:
Speed and
6 km/hr
Velocity
Velocity:
● Speed: a scalar quantity 6 km/hr to the left
that measures the rate
of motion
● Velocity: a vector
quantity that includes
both speed and the
direction of movement.
Tips

When planning a trip, understanding speed and velocity can help

you estimate arrival times and choose the best route to avoid being
late.

Solving Speed and Velocity

distance displaceme
speed = velocity nt
time = time
(includes direction, can be positive or
negative)
Practice Your Skills

A car travels 150 kilometers in 3 hours.

What is the average speed of the car?
Practice Your Skills

A car travels 150 kilometers in 3 hours.

What is the average speed of the car?

The average speed of the car is 50 km/hr.

Let’s Try It

A cyclist travels 90 kilometers in 2 hours. What is the average speed of the

cyclist?
Practice Your Skills

A train moves with an average speed of 60 km/hr for 2 hours and

then speeds up to 80 km/hr for the next 3 hours. What is the total
distance covered by the train?
Practice Your Skills

A train moves with an average speed of 60 km/hr for 2 hours and

then speeds up to 80 km/hr for the next 3 hours. What is the total
distance covered by the train?

The total distance covered by the train is 360 km.

Let’s Try It

A bus travels for 1.5 hours at a speed of 40 km/hr and then for 2.5 hours at a
speed of 70 km/hr. What is the total distance covered by the bus?
Practice Your Skills

A runner completes the first half of a race at an average speed of

8 km/hr and the second half at an average speed of 12 km/hr.
What is the runner's average speed for the entire race?
Practice Your Skills

A runner completes the first half of a race at an average speed of

8 km/hr and the second half at an average speed of 12 km/hr.
What is the runner's average speed for the entire race?

The average speed of the runner for the entire race is 9.6 km/hr.
Let’s Try It

A biker takes two routes to complete a journey. The first route is completed at
an average speed of 10 km/hr, and the second route at an average speed of 15
km/hr. If each route is the same distance, what is the biker's average speed for
the entire journey?
Let’s Try It

1. A car travels 100 meters in 20 seconds. Calculate the speed.

2. A runner jogs a distance of 500 meters in 2 minutes. What is the runner's

speed?

3. A car is moving at a speed of 40.6 meters per second. How far will the car
travel in 2 seconds?

4. A bus is traveling at a speed of 20 meters per second. How long will it take
for the bus to travel a distance of 200 meters?

5. A car is traveling at a speed of 15 meters per second. How far will the car
travel in 50 seconds?
Key Points

● Distance is the total path length traveled by an object, without

considering the direction.
● Distance is a scalar quantity, which means it only has magnitude
(how much), not direction.
● Displacement is the straight-line distance from the starting point to
the ending point, along with the direction.
● Displacement is a vector quantity, meaning it considers both
magnitude and direction.
Key Points

● Speed is the rate of motion, indicating how fast an object moves,

without direction.
● Velocity is a vector quantity that includes both speed and the
direction of movement.
Synthesis

What are some innovative ways technology uses the

principles of motion to protect our environment? Share your
research in class next meeting!
