Using Commas in Sentences

Intermediate ESL Lesson


Why Are Commas Important?
• - Commas help clarify meaning.
• - They separate ideas and prevent confusion.
• - Misplaced or missing commas can change
the meaning of a sentence.
1. Separating Items in a List
• Use commas to separate items in a series:

• Example:
• - I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and
grapes.
• - She packed books, pens, notebooks, and
snacks.
2. After Introductory Elements
• Place a comma after an introductory word,
phrase, or clause:

• Example:
• - After dinner, we went for a walk.
• - Yes, I will join the meeting.
• - While I was studying, it started raining.
3. Setting Off Non-Essential
Information
• Use commas to set off non-essential or extra
information:

• Example:
• - My sister, who lives in Paris, is visiting us.
• - The book, which I borrowed, is fascinating.
4. Before Conjunctions
• Use a comma before conjunctions (and, but,
or) when connecting independent clauses:

• Example:
• - I was tired, but I finished my homework.
• - She wanted to leave early, and I agreed.
5. For Direct Address
• Use commas to separate the name of a person
being addressed:

• Example:
• - John, can you pass the salt?
• - Could you help me, Sarah?
• - Thank you, everyone, for your support.
