What is a two stroke engine?

● A two-stroke (or two-stroke cycle) engine is a type of

internal combustion engine.
● It completes a power cycle with two strokes i.e up and
down movements of the piston during one power cycle.
● One power cycle is completed in one revolution of the
crankshaft.
● Two-stroke engines often have a high power-to-weight
ratio.
● Two-stroke engines have fewer moving parts than four-

Construction of Two Stroke Engine
Main Components :

Piston – The piston transfers the expanding force of gases to the

mechanical rotation of the crankshaft through a
connecting rod.

Crankshaft – It converts the reciprocating motion to rotational

motion.

Connecting Rod – It transfers motion from a piston to the

crankshaft and acts as a lever arm.

Flywheel – It is a mechanical device that is used to store energy.

Spark Plug – It delivers electric current to the combustion

chamber and in turn ignites the air-fuel mixture leading to abrupt
expansion of gases.

Counter Weight – Counterweight on the crankshaft is used to

reduce the vibrations due to imbalances in the rotating
assembly.
Working : Two Stroke Cycle

Two basic processes in the cycle:

1. Downstroke 2.
Upstroke
Working : Two Stroke Cycle

Down Stroke

● The piston moves from TDC (Top-Dead-

Center) to BDC (Bottom-Dead-Center)
letting the fresh air enter the combustion
chamber.
● The fresh air-fuel mixture gets into the
combustion chamber through the
crankcase.
● In this stroke, the crankshaft makes the
rotation of 1800
Working : Two Stroke Cycle
Up Stroke

● The piston is pushed from BDC to TDC. As a result, the

fuel-air mixture gets compressed and the spark plug
ignites the mixture
● The mixture expands and the piston is pushed down.
The inlet port is open during the upstroke. While the
inlet port is opened, the mixture gets sucked inside the
crankcase.
● When the mixture is pushed up into the combustion
chamber during the previous upstroke, a partial
vacuum is created as no mixture is left behind in the
crankcase.
● This mixture is ready to go into the combustion
chamber during downstroke but remains in the
crankcase until the piston goes up to TDC. In this

Up Stroke

● From the 2nd downstroke onwards the exhaust gases get

expelled out from one side while a fresh mixture enters
into the combustion chamber simultaneously due to a
partial vacuum created in the combustion chamber after
the removal of exhaust gases.
● Both things happen at the same time which makes it a 2-
stroke engine.
● The exhaust gases are expelled from the 2nd downstroke
onwards from one side while simultaneously a fresh
mixture of air and fuel is injected into the combustion
chamber due to the partial vacuum created in the
combustion chamber after the removal of exhaust gases
Applications of Two Stroke Engine
This engine is used when mechanical simplicity, light weight, and
high power-to-weight ratio is required

Uses in :

1. Four-wheeler automobiles
2. Motor cycles
3. Ships
4. Motor boats
5. Outdoor Tools
Applications of Two Stroke Engine

1. Four-wheeler
Automobiles

Automobile manufacturers like

Saab, Suzuki, Subaru, Auto-Union
etc. used two stroke engines in
the past

Production of two-stroke cars

ended in the 1980s in the West,
due to increasingly stringent
regulation of air pollution
Applications of Two Stroke Engine

2. Motor Cycles

Today, two-stroke engines are found

in on-road and off-road motorcycles,
mopeds, scooters, tuk-tuks,
snowmobiles, go-karts
Applications of Two Stroke Engine

3. Ships

Ships use a huge sized two stroke

engine
to power their motors

4. Motor Boats

Smaller sized boats also use two

stroke engine in them

5. Outdoor Tools
This engine is used in leaf blowers,
lawn mowers, chainsaws and motor
boats
Emissions of two stroke engine
● Two-stroke engines are lubricated by a petroil mixture. Oil
is mixed in with their petrol fuel, in a fuel-to-oil ratio of
around 32:1

● This oil then forms emissions, either by being burned in

the engine or as droplets in the exhaust, resulting in more
exhaust emissions, than four-stroke engines of comparable
power output

● After the combustion some unburnt gases also

contaminate the environment.

● This is why two stroke engines are not used

now-a-days.
Conclusion

● We have seen what is a two

stroke engine

● Its Working
● Its Applications
● Problem of pollution caused by it
