Understanding The Meaning of Safety Guidelines

What is Safety?
• Safety is the state of being free from danger or hazard.
• It is the condition of being protected from harm or
potential danger.

What is Safety Guideline?


• Safety guidelines are general rules, principles or advice
guiding the use of things or while carrying out an activity.
Fundamental Aspects of Safety Guidelines

Safety guidelines can be grouped into 3 fundamental


aspects as a road user:

1. Safety guidelines for pedestrians


2. Safety guidelines for cyclist
3. Safety guidelines for motorists
Safety Guidelines for Pedestrians
Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Road Safety Tips for
Pedestrians
• Be alert to reckless driver behaviour and disregard for
pedestrian right of way.
• Avoid walking where you cannot easily be seen by drivers.
• Always use the pedestrian bridge to cross over to the other
side of the road.
• Walk on the side walk. If there is none, walk on the side of the
road facing oncoming traffic.
• Wear reflective clothing at night and bright clothing by day.
• Be attentive by obeying the signals
• Pay attention to where you are headed. Always look left, right,
and left again before crossing the road.
• Avoid texting or wearing headphones while crossing the road.

Safety Tips for Cyclist
• Always use a proper fitting helmet while riding.
• Wear protective elbow and knee pads for cycling
• Ride with traffic.

• Plan and signal well ahead.


• Make no sudden moves except in self defence or in an emergency.

• Adhere to the rules of the road. Maintain your place in the right. lane
let everyone around you know what you plan to do.

• Avoid surprising others on the road. e.g ring a bell when coming out
of narrow or obscure pathways, signals the direction you intend to go.
• Maintain your Bicycle in excellent condition

Safety Tips for Motorist
• Drivers and passengers should wear seat belt every time when
moving in a vehicle.

• Children should be put in the right safety seat while travelling

• Avoid distracted driving. Types of distraction include; auditory,


visual, manual and cognitive distraction.

• Avoid drinking before or while driving.

• Stay alert. Be aware of other traffic or pedestrians on the road


before changing course to avoid pothole.
• Watch your speed.
