Parallel Circuit Wednesday 22 January 2025

Lesson objective: Key

• I will be able to identify parallel circuits words:
• I will be able to describe the properties of current in a Current
voltage
parallel circuit
Resistance
• I will be able to compare the properties of resistance in Amp
series and parallel circuits Volt
• I will be able to compare the brightness of bulbs
connected in series and parallel
Do Now…
1) Write the general rule for current & voltage in a series circuit
The current remains the same, the voltage will split up equally
Series Circuits
A series circuit is a simple circuit that
connects all the components in a loop.
Connected in Parallel
A parallel circuit has two or more paths
that the current can flow through

Parallel circuit: Basic rules

a) The voltage remains the same in each circuit & branch

b) The current will split up equally in each circuit & branch

Current in a parallel circuit
Current in a parallel
circuit splits when it
reaches a junction. Can
you identify the different
junctions?

Golden rule: the total

current entering a
junction must equal the
total current leaving a
junction.
Resistance in Parallel
• As you add more parallel components to a circuit
the total resistance of the circuit decreases
• This means that more current is pushed around
the circuit. (More parallel components, more
current produced by the battery)
• What would the current coming out of the
battery be if we added another bulb connected
in parallel?
