Objectives
At the end of this session, students are
able to;
• Identify different type of roof and able to
describe / draw them in detail
• Describe UBBL requirement regarding
roof construction
• Describe / label all roof component with
appropriate term
Roof: classification
• Classification by general shape,
material used – from previous lecture
• Classification by plane of outer surface
• Criterion – nos. of surface, slope
direction, overall shape
Type of roof (by plane of outer surface)

• Shed roof / lean-to roof

• One surface with one slope direction
Type of roof (by plane of outer surface)

• Gable roof
• Two surfaces with two slope direction

• Hip roof
• 4 surfaces with 4 slope direction

• Gambrel roof
• 4 surfaces with 2 slope direction
• 2 different slope amount (pitch)
Gambrel Roof
Type of roof (by plane of outer surface)

• Mansard roof
• 8 surfaces with 4 slope direction
• 2 different slope amount (pitch)
Type of roof (by plane of outer surface)

• Dutch gable roof

• 4 surfaces with 4 slope direction

construction shall be designed and
constructed of timbers of adequate
sizes which shall either be in hardwood
or if in other species of timber, shall be
treated by a suitable wood preservative
Roof construction regarding UBBL

above the adjacent area where normal
access is provided shall be protected
along the edges with suitable railings,
parapets or similar devices not less
than 1.0m in height or other suitable
means.

roof is enclosed by a ceiling, access to
such space shall be provided by means
of a trap door at least 0.75m in any
direction
