.
A drawing acts as the reflection of the
visual mind. On its surface we can probe,
test, and develop the workings of our
peculiar vision. —Edward Hill

FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING DRAWING
Learning Objectives

What is a Drawing?
• When one person sketches a rough map in giving direction to another, this is graphic
communication.
• Drawings, photographs, slides, transparencies, and sketches are all forms of graphic
communication.
• Any medium that uses a graphic image to aid in conveying a message, instructions, or an
idea is involved in graphic communication.

Engineering Drawing
• An engineering drawing is a type of technical drawing, used to fully and clearly define
requirements for engineered items, and is usually created in accordance with
standardized conventions for layout, nomenclature, interpretation, appearance size etc.
• Its purpose is to accurately and unambiguously capture all the geometric features of a
product or a component.
• The end goal of an engineering drawing is to convey all the required information that
will allow a manufacturer to produce that component.
• Engineering drawing is completely different from artistic drawing, which are used to
express aesthetic, philosophical, and abstract ideas.

Understanding the Role of Technical
Drawings
• Technical drawings serve one of three purposes:
1. Visualization
2. Communication
3. Documentation

DRAWING DESIGN
PROCESS
“A scientist can discover a new star but he cannot make one. He would have to
ask an engineer to do it for him.”
—Gordon L. Glegg,
The Design of Design, 1969
DESIGN THEME MORNING RITUALS
In engineering, 92 percent of the design process is
graphically based. The other 8 percent is divided between
mathematics and written and verbal communications.
Why?
11/2/2020
Just imagine trying to communicate
all the necessary details verbally or
in writing.
It would be impossible!

• Participate in an online discussion (Google Groups or within a LMS) with their teammates to brainstorm as many
ideas as possible in a given amount of time.

4. Generate Ideas
– Select a few of your brainstormed solutions to develop further.
– Create isometric drawings and/or orthographic diagrams, being sure to accurately
label all measurements.
11/2/2020
Engineering Drawing In Design Process
5. Explore Possibilities
– Share and discuss your developed ideas to determine which one to pursue.
– Create a pro/con chart or a matrix for your design brief to determine which idea
best fits to solve the problem and meet your criteria and constraints.
– IDEAS:
• Use 3D modeling software to create a model of the their design (Google Sketch Up, Autodesk
Inventor),
• Use iPad or online drawing applications (Explain Everything, Educreations, BaiBoard, Show Me,
Top Notes) to communicate their ideas,
• Create a survey to vote on best idea (Google Forms),
• Create a spreadsheet for students to complete that rates each project on how well it meets the
criteria and constraints (Decision Matrix).

6. Select an Approach
– Examine your pro/con chart or your matrix to decide which idea is the best
approach.
– Add a statement to this effect to your design brief.
– Explain why you have selected this approach and how it will succeed where other
solutions have failed.

7. Build a Model
– Construct a full-sized or scale-model based on your isometric and or orthographic
drawings.
– Your model should be made from easily found and low-cost materials, but should
be an operating version of your chosen solution.
– IDEAS:
• Use 3D modeling software to create a model of their design (Google Sketch Up, Autodesk
Inventor) after first drawing a sketch.

ASSIGNMENT – DESIGNING A PRODUCT
Using Engineering Design Process knowledge, design any one of the following
products mentioned below:
Weightlifting bench.
Design a weightlifting bench that uses a maximum of 600 pounds of free weights. The bench should
include the following stations: bench press, dual action leg lift, and adjustable inclined bench.
Cordless telephone.
Design a cordless telephone.
Cellular telephone mount.
Design a system for mounting cellular telephones in cars. The mount should not be permanent and
should be adaptable to most makes and models of cars. The design should not compromise the safety
of the vehicle operator by impeding the use of controls.
Portable light.
Design a battery-powered portable lighting system that leaves the operator’s hands free. Define a task
for which the operator would need such lighting, and design a light for that situation. Consider the
environment in which the operator is working and the amount of light needed for the task.

Architectural drawings are made according
to a set of conventions, which include
particular views (floor plan, section etc.),
sheet sizes, units of measurement and
scales, annotation and cross referencing.

Topographical and Engineering Map
Drawing
Topographical plans and maps are drawings
which show the main physical features on the
ground, such as buildings, fences, roads, rivers,
lakes and forests, as well as the changes in
elevation between land forms such as valleys
and hills (called vertical relief).
