TEST , MEASUREMENT & EVALUATION

Test: A test is a tool to evaluate the


skill, knowledge, capacities or
aptitudes of an individual or a group.
Measurement
“Measurement refers to the process of
administrating a test to obtain quantitative
data.”
So,measurement is such a process through
which our level of performance,fitness
level,ability,knowledge,personality traits and
skills are measured with the help of various
standard tests.
Evaluation
Evaluation is a means of organised assessment
done to appraise the value of
something.Evaluation requires a methodical
collection of information and systematic
analysis and presentation of achievements
and challenges.Evaluation is very important
means of enhancing performance.
Importance of test and measurement in
sports
1.Knowledge of progress: With the help of test
and measurement a teacher can get the
appropriate knowledge about the progress of
students.Then the teacher can prepare plan
accordingly.Without test and measurement it
is difficult to determine accurately the extent
to which the objectivies have been met.
2.Preparation of effective planning
With the help of test and measurement the
effective planning can be prepared.Teaching or
coaching method can be changed on the basis
of the result of test and
measurement.Students can be guided or
directed appropriately with the help of test
and measurement.
3. For knowing the abilities and capacities

With the help of test and measurement teacher can come


to know about the abilities and capacities of students
which ultimately help in preparation of further training
programme.
4. Works as a tool of motivation: Test and measurement
is a vital motivational device.A sportsmen comes to
know his level of achievement or performance with the
help of test and measurement.He tries to compare his
performance with his previous performance.So,test
and measurement help in motivating the sportsperson.
5. Classification of sportsmen
After test and measurement a proper
classification can be done on the basis of
individual capacities.We are also aware that
individual differences exist among
sportsmen.Different training load is given to
different individuals.So,a proper classification
of sportsmen is required to give them proper
training load.
Classification of test in Physical Education
and sports
1 . Motor ability tests : are the tests which are
used to analysis various sports skills of an
individual known as motor ability test.These
tests help a coach in identifying the motor
abilities necessary for sports
performance.There are various motor ability
tests such as purdue pegboard motor ability
test,Arm motor ability test etc.

2. Physical fitness test : are the tests which are used
to measure physical fitness.For example AAHPER
& youth fitness test,Roger’s physical fitness
test,Indiana motor fitness test etc.
3. Anthropometric tests : in these tests,the length of
various bones,body weight,standing
posture,sitting posture and angle of arches are
measured and tested.All these factors are
significant from the point of view of sports
performance.

4. Cardiovascular tests: These tests are used to
measure the cardiovascular fitness.This can be
measured with the help of treadmill test,Harvard
step test,3 minute step test,etc.
5. Achievement test : The skills of different sports
and games achieved by sportsperson is measured by
achievement tests.For each game there are various
tests to measure a particular skill.For ex. Johnson’s
Basketball test, Warner test of soccer, etc.

6. Questionnaires and Interview: These method
is used to obtain information directly from
individuals about present status of their
behaviour,beliefs,attitudes or interests.A
questionnaire is a tool which consists of a series
of questions used to collect useful information
from subject.Interview is a formal conversation
between the interviewer and respondent to
collect data.

7. Medical test : with the help of medical test,
the health of students is examined.Every student
should be examined and his record should be
maintained properly.
Test administration guidelines in physical
education and sports
Advance preparation
1. The selection of the appropriate test is the first
consideration. Tests should be selected with a view to
the time available,the size and age of the group,the
cost and the amount of equipment and facilities.
2. Equipment and facilities: A test requires proper
space,equipments,courts,marking etc.All equipments
like stopwatches,balls,measuring taps,score cards and
markers should be ready before the commencement
of the test.

3. Preparing of the testing area: If the test
instructions require for a specific arrangement
of testing area,the required pattern should be
followed properly.
4. Selection of the administration procedures:
Where,when and how the administration will be
done are important questions.Its should be
taken into consideration very carefully to have
proper conduct of test.

5. Orientation of students: To get satisfactory results
of the test,student orientation is essential.Students
should be well aware about the purpose of the
test.The test may be explained and demonstrated in
advance for obtaining the actual results of the test.
6. Training of student leaders and scorer: If qualified
people are available they should be used to help in
the testing programme.Experienced teachers are very
important when testing procedures are complicated of
difficult.

During testing
1. Last minute check : The teachers should arrive early
to make last minute check of equipment,court,and
facilities that are used in the test.It means that
everything should be ready and in place so that the
actual testing may be started without delay.
2. Demonstration : Each test item should be
demonstrated to the students.The demonstrator
should be well prepared to demonstrate the technique
of the test item.

3. Warm up and practice : After the explanation
and demonstration and before testing is begun,a
short warm up should be given to the
students.Students should also be given some
time for practice of the test item before the
commencement of the test.
4. Safety measure : should be followed during
the time of testing for the safety of students.

After Testing
1. Collection of score cards : All test
materials,documents along with score cards should
be collected immediately after the test is over.The
results and other materials related to the test
should be kept at a secure place.
2 . Conversation of raw scores: Raw scores should be
converted into standard scores.The actual conversation
is usually accomplished through the use of the norms
in form of scoring tables.

3. Comparing test results with norms : The test
results should be compared with norms to check
the performance.
