The rock layer at the top represents the youngest layer as it was deposited
RD
most recently.

The fossils in Layer B are older than Layer C. RD

A layer of volcanic ash is found above a layer containing a dinosaur fossil.

This pottery shard is approximately 3,000 years old according to carbon-14

dating.

The oldest coins were found at the bottom of the treasure chest.

Tree rings indicate this wooden beam is from a tree that was cut down in
1721 CE.

Based on the style of the arrowhead, it is likely from the Neolithic period.

The fossilized shell contains isotopes that allow us to date it to 1.8 million
years ago.

The granite intrusion cuts through the sedimentary layers, so it must be

younger.

Scientists used a special technique to find out how old this dinosaur egg was. RD

Earth has changed.

Provide an example of how

plate tectonics can be used as
evidence that the Earth has
changed over time.
● Weathering, erosion and deposition are constantly modifying and changing the surface
to create new rocks and destroy existing or previously made rocks. These are key factors
in the rock cycle
● The age of rocks can be determined 2 ways
○ Relative Dating - Law of Superposition
■ This will tell the age in relation to other layers. “Layer B is older than Layer A”
○ Absolute (Radioactive) Dating
■ This will use the amount of radioactive material in the rock to determine the
exact age of the rock.
● The Earth can provide evidence of change in many ways.
○ Sedimentary rock layers
○ The shape of the rock layer can show evidence of water waves or wind
○ The type of fossils in the rock layers can provide evidence of the type of land and/or
climate
○ The shape of landforms can show proof of exposure to different amounts of
weathering and erosion.
○ Plate tectonics and Pangea show evidence that the Earth’s crust is moving and
changing
