SURGICAL NURSING ASSIGNMENT

GENERIC NURSING LEVEL 300

GROUP ONE
DEFINITION

 SINUSITIS REFERS TO INFLAMMATION OR

SWELLING OF THE TISSUE LINING THE SINUSES,
WHICH ARE THE AIR-FILLED CAVITIES LOCATED
IN THE BONES AROUND THE NOSE.
 SINUSITIS IS A CONDITION CHARACTERIZED BY INFLAMMATION OF
THE SINUSES, WHICH CAN BE ACUTE (SHORT-TERM) OR CHRONIC
(LONG-TERM). IT IS COMMONLY CAUSED BY A VIRAL OR BACTERIAL
INFECTION OR ALLERGIES.
DEFINITION
ANOTHER NAME FOR SINUSITIS IS RHINOSINUSITIS. THIS TERM IS

OFTEN USED TO REFER TO INFLAMMATION OR INFECTION OF THE

SINUSES AND THE NASAL PASSAGES COLLECTIVELY. RHINOSINUSITIS

ENCOMPASSES BOTH THE NASAL PASSAGES (RHINITIS) AND THE

SINUSES, HENCE REFLECTING THE INTERCONNECTED NATURE OF

THESE STRUCTURES IN THE UPPER RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.

CAUSES
Viralinfections i.e.(common cold)
Bacterial infections

Fungal infections
Allergies
Nasal polyps
Deviated septum
RISK FACTORS’
Previous history of sinusitis
 Allergies

 Asthma

 Nasal polyps
 Smoking

 Immune system disorders

SYMPTOMS
Facial pain or pressure
 Nasal congestion
 Runny nose
 Thick, discolored nasal discharge
 Loss of smell
 Cough

 Fever

 Fatigue
TREATMENTS
1. HOME REMEDIES:
 Rest

 Hydration
 Humidifiers
 Warm compresses
 Saline nasal spray
TREATMENT CONT”
2. MEDICATIONS:
 Decongestants to reduce nasal congestion
 Antihistamines for allergies
 Nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation
 Pain relievers for discomfort
 Antibiotics for bacterial infections
TREATMENT CONT”

3. SINUS IRRIGATION:

Using a saline solution to rinse the sinuses

4. SURGERY:

In severe or chronic cases, surgery may be recommended to improve drainage

and alleviate symptoms.

NOTE’’
IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONSULT WITH A HEALTHCARE PROVIDER

FOR AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS AND APPROPRIATE TREATMENT

PLAN FOR SINUSITIS. CHRONIC OR RECURRENT SINUSITIS MAY

REQUIRE MORE AGGRESSIVE MANAGEMENT AND FOLLOW-UP

CARE.
NOTE’’

NURSING MANAGEMENT PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN

CARING FOR PATIENTS WITH SINUSITIS. HERE ARE

SOME KEY NURSING INTERVENTIONS AND

CONSIDERATIONS FOR PATIENTS WITH SINUSITIS

ASSESSMENT
Conduct a thorough assessment of the patient's symptoms, including
facial pain, nasal congestion, runny nose, and fever.
 Evaluate the patient's medical history, including any allergies or
previous sinus infections.
 Assess for signs of complications such as severe headache, vision
changes, or persistent high fever.
EDUCATION
Educate the patient about sinusitis, its causes, symptoms, and
treatment options.
 Provide instructions on how to use prescribed medications correctly,
including decongestants, nasal sprays, and antibiotics.
 Teach the patient about sinus irrigation techniques and proper hygiene
practices to help alleviate symptoms and prevent future infections.
SYMPTOMS MANAGEMENT
 Assist the patient in managing symptoms such as pain, congestion,
and cough through appropriate medication administration and comfort
measures.
 Encourage adequate hydration to help thin mucus secretions and
promote sinus drainage.
 Monitor and address any respiratory distress or worsening symptoms
promptly.
PROMOTION OF COMFORT
Provide comfort measures such as warm compresses,
humidifiers, or steam inhalation to relieve nasal
congestion and facial pressure.
 Encourage rest and adequate sleep to support the
body's recovery process.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Monitor the patient's response to treatment and
assess for any changes or complications.
 Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in
relieving symptoms and improving the patient's
overall condition.
COLLABORATION
Work collaboratively with the healthcare team,
including physicians, respiratory therapists, and other
providers, to ensure comprehensive care for the patient.
Communicate any significant changes or concerns in the
patient's condition to facilitate timely interventions.
NOTE’’

COMPLICATIONS OF SINUSITIS CAN OCCUR WHEN

THE CONDITION IS NOT PROPERLY TREATED OR

IF IT BECOMES SEVERE. SOME POTENTIAL

COMPLICATIONS OF SINUSITIS INCLUDE:

CHRONIC SINUSITIS

If sinusitis persists for an extended period (usually more than

12 weeks), it is classified as chronic sinusitis. This can lead to

persistent symptoms and require more aggressive treatment.

ACUTE SINUSITIS

COMPLICATIONS MAY INCLUDE:

 Sinus Infections: Bacterial sinusitis can lead to the spread of infection to nearby tissues or

into the bloodstream, causing serious infections.

 Orbital (eye) complications: In severe cases, sinusitis can lead to infections of the eye orbit,

causing symptoms like swelling, pain, and vision changes.

 Meningitis: In rare cases, the infection may spread to the protective membranes covering

the brain and spinal cord, leading to meningitis.

ACUTE SINUSITIS CONT”
COMPLICATIONS MAY INCLUDE
 Intracranial complications: Infections can spread to the brain, causing
conditions such as brain abscess or meningitis.
 Osteomyelitis: Inflammation and infection may extend to the bones of
the skull, leading to osteomyelitis, a serious bone infection.
 Subperiosteal abscess: An abscess can form between the periosteum (the
membrane covering bones) and the skull due to infection.
SYSTEMIC SINUSITIS
SYSTEMIC COMPLICATIONS MAY INCLUDE:

 Sepsis: A severe systemic infection that can lead to organ dysfunction and life-

threatening complications.

 Respiratory complications: Chronic or severe sinusitis can exacerbate respiratory

conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

NOTE’’
IT IS ESSENTIAL TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IF SINUSITIS

SYMPTOMS PERSIST OR WORSEN, ESPECIALLY IF

ACCOMPANIED BY SEVERE HEADACHES, FACIAL SWELLING,

VISION CHANGES, OR HIGH FEVER. EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND

PROPER TREATMENT CAN HELP PREVENT COMPLICATIONS

ASSOCIATED WITH SINUSITIS.
