RECAP
❖We have learned that writing is a method of
representing language in visual or tactile form to
communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.
The connection between grammar and writing is a
very important one. The rules of grammar help to
govern the way writing takes place and ensure that
it can be easily understood by the people who read
it. Every language in the world has different rules for
grammar and writing. It is important to keep in mind
that though proper grammar is important for good
writing, it is also very important for speaking the
LESSON
❖The technical aspect of writing, also known
as mechanics, is one of the properties of a
well-written text. It is characterized as a set of
conventions on how to spell, punctuate,
capitalize and abbreviate a composition. Today
you will further strengthen your knowledge on
common grammatical errors in writing most
particularly in academic and formal texts.
There are five important rules that should be
observed in this lesson.
❖1. Always use Standard English. Example:
Whatever you decide is all right with me.
❖The two-word form “all right” in this sentence is a
standard spelling instead of “alright”. 2. Avoid
exclamation marks unless they are part of a direct
quotation. Example: The science community went
wild!
❖Avoid exclamation marks unless they are
part of a direct quotation. Using an
exclamation mark when writing is rather like
shouting or raising your voice when speaking.
You should avoid using exclamation marks in
formal writing, unless absolutely necessary.
❖3. Use single quotation marks for a quotation within a
quotation. Example: "When I say 'immediately', I mean
some time before September" said the editor-in-chief.
❖Notice the above example that when you start to use
double quotation marks, then you should use single
quotation marks for a quote within a quote. If you use
single quotation marks, then you should use double
quotation marks for a quote within a quote.
❖4. Mention the full name of an
organization with the abbreviation in
parenthesis, in first mention.
Thereafter use the abbreviation.
Example: The Food and Nutrition
Research Institute (FNRI) has
developed a food pyramid, simple and
easy to follow daily eating guide for
❖Notice in this example that the complete name of an institution or
organization comes before the abbreviation. After the reader knows
what the abbreviation means, the abbreviation may be used alone
❖5. All information taken from elsewhere should have reference to
its source and its presentation form should not change the main
points of the source text. Example: The dispute started when Mike
Brown, a professor of Astronomy at the California Institute of
Technology (Caltech) discovered an asteroid bigger than Pluto in
2005 .
ACTIVITIES

❖Activity 1 Write CM if the sentence has correct use of

mechanics, and WM for wrong use of mechanics.
❖1. Debbie will not even try Korean, Japanese, or Thai
food; but he will eat anything that his mother cooks.
❖2. Williams, S.T. (Ed.). (2015). Referencing: A guide to
citation rules (3rd ed.). New York, NY: My Publisher
❖3. Three-fourth of the students were absent.

❖4. Participants will learn how to take tests, fill out

job applications, and tackle tough job interviews,”
said Patrice Delgado, district superintendent.
❖5. She stood before three attorney’s generals
offices and knew her time was up.
