Parts and

Functions of
the Male
Reproductive
System
Understanding Anatomy
and Physiology
What is the Male Reproductive
System?

• A collection of organs
responsible for producing
sperm and delivering it to
the female reproductive
system.

• Plays a critical role in

human reproduction and
hormone regulation.
Primary Organs

• Testes (Testicles):
- Produce sperm and
testosterone.
- Located within the scrotum
for temperature regulation.

• Scrotum:
- Protects the testes and
maintains temperature for sperm
production.
Duct System Components

• Epididymis:
- Stores and matures sperm.
- epididymis is a tube
about 20 feet long, which is
tightly coiled and bunched into a
length of just 2 inches.

• Vas Deferens:
- Transports sperm from the
epididymis to the urethra.
Accessory Glands

• Seminal Vesicles:
- Produce fluid rich in fructose to
nourish sperm.

• Prostate Gland:
- Secretes fluid that helps activate
sperm.

• Bulbourethral (Cowper's) Glands:

- Produces pre-ejaculate fluid to
lubricate the urethra.
Urethra and Penis

• Urethra:
- Dual-purpose tube for
transporting semen and urine.

• Penis:
- Delivers sperm to the
female reproductive system.

Average Penis Length:

Flaccid: 3.6 inches (9.16 cm)
Erect: 5.2 inches (13.12 cm)
Role of Hormones

• Testosterone:
- Produced by the testes; responsible for secondary sexual
characteristics.

• Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH):

- Stimulates sperm production.

• Luteinizing Hormone (LH):

- Triggers testosterone production.
DIFFERENCE IN SEMEN
AND SPERM

• Semen, also known as

seminal fluid, is much
more than just sperm.
• Sperm is only about 5 to
10% of any given male
single ejaculation and the
rest is fructose (aka
sugar), fatty acids, and
proteins to nourish the
sperm during their
journey.

Sperm Count
• A man will produce
roughly 525 billion
sperm during his whole
lifetime and close to 1
billion per month.
• There are around 200 to
500 million sperm in an
average in a single
human ejaculation !!

the Male Activation.

System Hormone Production
(Testosterone).

Delivery of Sperm to the

Female Reproductive System.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED):
• Inability to maintain an erection.
Common
Prostate Enlargement:
Disorders of
the Male • Difficulty in urination.
Reproductive Testicular Cancer:
System
• Abnormal growth of cells in the
testes.

Infertility:
• Low sperm count or abnormal sperm
function.
The male reproductive system
is essential for reproduction
and hormone production.

Each part has a specific

Key function contributing to the
Takeaways overall system.

Understanding its structure and

function is key to addressing
potential health issues.
