PRESENTATION ON
Underground Electricity Line.
4

What is the underground electricity

line ?

An underground
electricity line is a cable
that distributes
electricity underground,
as opposed to overhead
power lines which are
suspended from poles or
towers.
5

The Benefits of Underground Power Cable for

House

 Enhanced Aesthetics
To be candid, overhead
cables spoil the tidy
ambiance of a local area
when set up
inappropriately. Moreover,
they look unsightly.
However, when you use
underground cables.
 More Durability
Unlike overhead wires,
underground PVC cables
are tougher, more durable,
and last for many years.
6

 power cables are varied and lay

buried under the ground and so
the outage cases are considerably
minimized.
 Safe for Houses and
Apartments
Electrical hazards are common in
buildings or homes that use
overhead wiring. And so, it’s
dangerous to live in a house
connected to overhead cables
leading to electrical short-
circuiting. It is too unsafe for you
and your family.
 Low Maintenance Expenses
An underground power cable is
under the ground and so
maintenance costs are quite less
as the wire is safe from potential
damage.
7

Underground power lines have many advantages

over overhead power lines, including:

 Reduced risk of
outages: Underground power lines
are less likely to be affected by storms,
lightning, ice, and trees.
 Reduced visual
impact: Underground power lines are
not visible after construction.
 Reduced risk of
wildfires: Underground power lines
are less likely to start wildfires.

 Reduced risk of vehicle

collisions: Underground power lines
are less likely to be damaged by
vehicles.
8

 Reduced risk of animal

contact: Underground power lines are
less likely to blink when animals or
branches come into contact with
them.
 There is no chance of the electricity wire
breaking in
stormy rain.

 There is no possibility of damage to the line of

current in case of a car accident on the road.

 If there is a short circuit due to any reason,

there is no harm to people or anything else.
9

Underground power lines have several

disadvantages
Cost: Underground power lines are
more expensive to build and maintain
than overhead lines.
 Vulnerability: Underground power
lines are vulnerable to damage from
digging, earthquakes, flooding, and
other construction.
 Maintenance: It can be difficult to
locate and repair faults in
underground power lines.
 Voltages: There are limitations on
the voltages that can be buried
underground.
 Connection to overhead lines: All
underground power lines are
eventually connected to overhead
10

Overhead electrical lines

Overhead power lines are electrical wires that

run above ground to transmit electricity over
long distances. They are made up of multiple
conductors suspended from poles or towers,
and are often used to supply electricity to
homes and businesses.
11

Overhead electrical lines can have many negative

impacts
 Safety
Coming into contact with a live
overhead line can be fatal, even if you
don't touch it. Voltages as low as 230
volts can cause injury or death.

 Noise
High-voltage overhead lines can produce
a crackling sound and low-frequency
hum, known as "corona discharge".

 Road Accident
A car accident can break the current pillar
and tear the wire
12

Environmental impact

 Birds: Overhead lines can electrocute

birds that perch on them, which can
threaten bird populations.
 Visual pollution: The sight of
overhead lines and poles can be an
eyesore in residential areas and
parks.
 Electrical fires: Overhead lines are
exposed to extreme weather
conditions, which can increase the
risk of electrical fires.
 Maintenance: Maintenance activities
like trimming trees and repairing
poles can disrupt natural habitats and
release pollutants.
13

 Always maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from overhead

lines and more than 10 feet if the voltage is over 50 kilovolts
(50,000 volts).
 The higher the voltage, the greater the distance required
between the lines and workers or equipment.
 Consult the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) Table A for minimum clearance distances.

The Highest Country Electricity Use Underground

Electricity
•Underground cables in the UK
•The National Grid's transmission system for high voltage electricity
includes over 900 miles of underground cables. In areas where the National
Grid is a DNO, the network is made up of 83,900 miles of underground
cables.
17

Underground electricity lines are being installed

in various parts of Bangladesh, including

 Dhaka: The Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) has

designed and planned to bury 190 kilometers of overhead power
cables in the city. The project includes replacing pole-mounted
transformers with box-type transformers.
 Sylhet: The Bangladesh Power Development Board has
constructed an underground line of 38 kilometers in the Sylhet
metropolitan area.
 Rajshahi and Rangpur: NESCO has completed an underground
line of 11 kilometers in these areas.
 Khulna, Barisal, and Jessore: The West Zone Power
Distribution Company has a plan to install underground lines of
about 2,061 kilometers.
 Hatirjheel: Underground cables have been installed in this
area.

Development Board (BPDB)
successfully initiated
underground power lines in
the Dargah Gate area and
removed all overhead cables
and electric poles last
Sunday.

 Delay in works and the monsoon intensified
the sufferings of the city commuter
20

Now the installed capacity of electricity generation of the country exceeds 25,000 MW and
around 100% of the populations are under electricity coverage. The government of Bangladesh
has a dream to become a high-income country by 2041 and the country plans to increase its
power capacity to 60,000 MW by 2041 as per the Power Sector Master Plan (PSMP 2016)
conducted by JICA.

The Underground Electricity Line Problem In

Bangladesh

 Overhead cables: Overhead

internet, satellite TV, and other
cables pose a threat to public
safety and the power
distribution system.
 Lack of coordination: Power
distribution companies (DPCs)
have difficulty coordinating
with internet service providers
(ISPs) and cable TV operators
to bring overhead cables
underground.
 Technical reasons: Some
companies, like Bahon Limited,
have cited technical reasons
for not participating in
29

are some things to know about underground electricity lines

 Insulation: Underground
cables need robust
insulation to withstand high
voltage. The insulation
method depends on the
type of cable used.
 Heat dissipation:
Underground cables
produce heat, which needs
to be dissipated to the
surrounding environment. To
compensate, underground
cables are usually larger to
reduce their electrical
resistance and heat
produced
 Location: Many utilities
map and record the
locations of underground
lines. Before digging, you

Types of Underground Electric Transmission Cables

There are two main types of underground transmission lines currently in

use. One type is constructed in a pipe with fluid or gas pumped or
circulated through and around the cable in order to manage heat and
insulate the cables. The other type is a solid dielectric cable which requires
no fluids or gas and is a more recent technological advancement. The
common types of underground

cable construction include:

 High-pressure, fluid-filled pipe (HPFF)

 High-pressure, gas-filled pipe (HPGF)
 Self-contained fluid-filled (SCFF)
 Solid cable, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE)
31

High-Pressure, Fluid-Filled Pipe-Type Cable

A high-pressure, fluid-filled (HPFF) pipe-

type of underground transmission line,
consists of a steel
pipe that contains three high-voltage
conductors.
Figure 1 illustrates a typical HPFF pipe-
type cable.
Each conductor is made of copper or
aluminum; insulated with high-quality, oil-
impregnated kraft
paper insulation; and covered with metal

Electricity transmission and

distribution:
Once generated, electricity is transported via the electricity grid on
transmission and distribution networks. Separate networks serve Great
Britain and the island of Ireland.
•The transmission network is like the motorways, carrying vehicles
(electricity) at high speed (high voltage) across the country. This is the
network of big pylons and overhead lines you see around the country.

•The distribution networks are the local roads, connecting motorways with
communities to help vehicles complete their journey. These are the
smaller pylons (and underground cables) carrying lower voltage lines.

Karnaphuli River and supplies it to the national grid:

•Location: The Karnaphuli

Hydropower Station is located in
Kaptai Upazila, Rangamati Hill
District, Chattogram Division,
Bangladesh.
•Capacity: The plant has a capacity
of 230 megawatts (MW).
•Construction: The plant was built
in 1962 as part of the Karnafuli
•Dam: The Kaptai
Multipurpose Dam, an earth-filled dam on the Karnaphuli River,
Project.
creates the Kaptai Lake, which serves as the water reservoir for the plant.
•Flood management: The plant is also a vital flood management
installation for the areas downstream.
•Owner: The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) owns the
plant.
