What are network devices?

• Types of Network Devices

– Network Hub
– Network Switch
– Gateway
– Network Router
– Bridge
– Repeater
• Advantages
Introduction

• The development of computer networking started with

the progress of Arpanet in the period of the ending of
the 1960s and in the initial stages of the 1970s.
• Before the networking devices, there were computer
vendor networks which are mainly constructed to
associate connection between terminals and remote job
entry locations with that of the mainframe. Whereas the
crucial thought behind the networking was to
accomplish network sharing and it was the basis in the
ARPANET design.
What are network devices?

• The devices which are used for

communication between different
hardware’s used in the computer
network are known as network
devices.
• These devices are also known as
physical devices, networking
hardware, and network equipment
otherwise computer networking
devices.
Types of Network Devices
Network Hub

• A network segment is formed by attaching network

cables to a connectivity device. And this connectivity
device is called a Hub.
• Hubs generally don’t filter information; however,
instead, they conduct incoming information frames or
packets to any or all the elements. Nowadays, a
central switch or hub is used by all the networks to
which computers are connected.
Types Network Hub

• Active Hub
These hubs have their own power supply and these hubs are used to clean,
increase & transmit the signal using the network. It works as a wiring center &
repeater. Active hubs play a key role in extending the distance between nodes.
• Passive Hub
These hubs collect wiring from the power supply and different nodes of an
active hub. These hubs transmit the signals over the network without
improving & cleaning them. These hubs are not suitable for extending the
distance between nodes like an active hub.
Network Switch

• Similar to a hub, this is also working at the layer in the LAN and
a switch is more clever compare with a hub. As the hub is used
for data transferring, whereas a switch is used for filtering &
forwarding the data. So this is the more clever technique to
deal with the data packets.
Network Router

• A network router is one kind of network device in a

computer network and it is used for routing traffic
from one network to another. These two networks
could be private to a public company network. For
example, here a router is considered as traffic police
at the junction, he directs dissimilar traffic networks
to dissimilar directions.
Bridge

• A Bridge in the computer network is used to unite two

or more network segments. The main function of a
bridge in network architecture is to store as well as
transmit frames among the various segments. Bridges
use MAC (Media Access Control) hardware for
transferring frames.
Gateway

• Generally, a gateway performs at the session &

transport layers in the OSI model. Gateways offer
conversion between networking technologies like OSI
(Open System Interconnection) & TCP/IP. Because of
this, these are connected to two or many
autonomous networks, where each network has its
own domain name service, routing algorithm,
topology, protocols, and procedures of network
administration & policies.
Functions of Gateway
Repeater

• A repeater is an electronic device that amplifies the

signal it receives. You can think of repeater as a device
which receives a signal and retransmits it at a higher
level or higher power so that the signal can cover
longer distances, more than 100 meters for standard
LAN cables. Repeaters work on the Physical layer.
Advantages of Networking Devices

• Working with them is seamless and superbly efficient

because, whether working independently or working
together, connectivity devices do a motivating job of
handling your specific Internet requests
simultaneously, with millions a lot of being handled
each second round the world.
• So, wherever you’re and whatever computer you have
been using, you can have confident networking
hardware to bring the globe to your fingertips.
Conclusion

• However, having a solid understanding of the kinds of

network devices accessible will help you style an
engineered network that’s secure and serves your
organization well.
• Thus, to confirm the continued security and
availableness of your network, you must fastidiously
monitor your devices and activity around them;
ultimately, you’ll be able to spot hardware problems,
configuration problems and attacks quickly.
Point-to-Point Connection
The point-to-point is a kind of line configuration which describes the
method to connect two
communication devices in a link. The point-to-point connection is a
unicast connection.
There is a dedicated link between an individual pair of sender and
receiver.
The capacity of the entire channel is reserved only for the
transmission of the packet between the sender and receiver.
• If the network is made up of point-to-point
connections, then the packet will have to
travel through many intermediate devices.
The link between the multiple intermediate
devices may be of different length. So, in
point-to-point network finding the smallest
distance to reach the receiver is most
important.
tipoint Connection
ultipoint connection is a connection established between
than two devices. The multipoint connection is also called
drop line configuration.
tipoint connection, a single link is shared by multiple devices.
can be said that the channel capacity is shared temporarily
ery device connecting to the link.
ces are using the link turn by turn, then it is said to be time sha
onfiguration.
• In the figure above, you can see that the
five workstations share the common link
between the main frame and the
workstations. The multipoint networks are
also called “Broadcast network”.
• Key Differences Between Point-to-Point and
Multipoint Connection
1. When there is a single dedicated link only between two devices, it
is a point-to-point connection whereas, if more than two devices
share a single link then it is said to be a multipoint connection.
2. In multipoint connection, the channel capacity is shared
temporarily by the devices in connection. On the other hand, in a
point-to-point connection, the entire channel capacity is reserved
only for the two devices in the connection.
3. In point-to-point connection, there can only be a single
transmitter and a single receiver. On the other hand, in multipoint
connection, there is a single transmitter, and there can be
multiple receivers.
