What is work at Height
Work at or above 6 feet or 1.8m is considered as work at height
Vertical Distance
Fragile/sloping roof
Fall of object/material
Deteriorated material
Unprotected edges
Weather
Weather can alter the working conditions
and must be taken into account while
planning for work at height
Risk Factors for Work at Height
Deterioration of Materials
With the passage of time, materials
deteriorate due to weather exposure.
It is extremely important to consider
this factor undertaking work at height
Unprotected edges
Leading edges are simply the unprotected
edge of a horizontal surface. It could be
the edge of a roof, a deck, or a scaffold
platform. Since these edges often lead to
a significant drop, they pose a
serious fall hazard to those working near
them
Access Equipment
Access equipment:
•Ladders
•Stepladder
•Scaffolds
•MEWP(Mobile Elevated Work
Platform)
•Mobile Tower Scaffolds
Access Equipment & Fall
Protection
Safety Precautions for Ladders
•Temporary ladders shall extend a least 1 meters or
3 rungs above the landing platform and be properly
secured
•Ladder must be secured at the top and footed by
someone standing on the bottom rung
•Angling the ladder ideally at 75° to the horizontal or
at a ratio of 1:4 (1 ‘out’ to 4 ‘up’) distance away from
the wall to height.
•Maintain three points of contact at all times.
•Always have a firm grip on the ladder and keep a
good balance.
•Keep you hands free and tools in a shoulder bag or
belt attachment.
Access Equipment & Fall
Protection
Safety precautions for lethal
ladders
Safety precautions for the use of
stepladders are:
•Carry out a daily check of the
stepladder before use
• Always ensure that the ladder is fully
open
•Make sure that the locking devices are
in place
•Only use on firm, level ground which is
not slippery
• Do not work off the top two steps (or
the top three steps for
swing-back/double-sided stepladders)

4) Bamboo Ladder:
-Bamboo ladder is also used where
MTL/AWP access is not possible
-Prior to use, BL must be inspected to
ensure that it does not pose any hazard
Fall Protection
Fall Arrest:
Consists of a(n)
• Full Body Harness
• Lanyard
• Shock Absorber
• Snap Hook
• Dorsal (D-Ring)
• Anchorage Point

Guardrails
Guardrails are used to protect
workers from falls when working at
heights. Guardrails should be used
when a worker could have access to
an unprotected edge.
Safety Nets
Safety nets are classified as a passive fall
protection system which can be installed as
either a barrier to prevent a fall, or beneath
the work to catch a falling worker.
Fall Restraint
Prevent the fall – personal restraint
Prevent falls by keeping worker away from fall
hazard
Comprised of a body belt or body harness, an
anchorage, connectors
Often used when section of guardrail or hole
cover is temporarily removed
Emergency Response
Emergency Rescue
Emergency response shall be in place to face any foreseeable events where
workers might be trapped while working at height and worker can be brought
down in safe manner
Engineering solution to avoid
need of work at height in KE
1) LBS:
Load Break Switch is used for overhead
application sectionalizing of HT network
and make/break switching operation both
in “ON and OFF LOAD” condition for
11KV feeders.
2) PMU:
A PMU is an SF6 insulated 11kV/50Hz
RMU installed with distribution
transformer. PMU is an on load switching
device used to make and break 11 KV
circuit without feeder switching from Grid
station or substation/RMU.

need of work at height in KE
3) Fuse claw/Hot stick
Insulated fiber glass rod(extendable) for
installation/dislodging overhead HT
cutout fuse cartridge from ground
level/MTL deck.
4) Pole Saw
Tree pruning can be done via fiber glass
pole saw(extendable) from ground level
to eliminate the hazard of fall
