Prepositional Phrases

In this lesson, you will:

compose clear and coherent sentences using the appropriate

prepositional phrases,

ask permission/make requests appropriately; and

use a particular kind of sentence for specific purpose and

audience - asking permission, making requests, and responding
to questions
A preposition added with an object (noun or pronoun)
forms a phrase. A phrase is a group of words without a
subject and verb, used as one part of speech.

A prepositional phrase usually consists of a preposition

and its object. However, words that describe the object
called modifiers are sometimes included in the phrase.

Examples:
1. The book on the table is mine.
2. She walked through the park with her dog.
3. I went to the store to buy milk.
Examples:
My neighbor, Dianne, does not like disturbing others, so
she properly parks her car outside the church.

A. Prepositional Phrase Used as an Adjective
When prepositional phrases are used as adjectives, they modify nouns and
pronouns in the same way single-word adjectives do. The phrase comes
immediately after the noun or pronoun it modifies. The phrase answers the
questions which one and what kind of.

Examples:

1. Hannah baked cupcakes with colorful sprinkles for her new neighbors.
2. Claire offers her neighbors free art classes in painting and poetry.
3. The woman with the red hair is my sister.
4. The house on the hill is for sale.
B. Prepositional Phrase Used as an Adverb

When prepositional phrases are used as adverbs, they may be

found in any place within the sentence. The adverb phrase modifies
a verb, adjective, or an adverb.

Examples:

1. Iko picks up the newspapers at the corner of Main Street.

2. Iko delivers the newspapers to the neighborhood early in the
morning.
3. She arrived at the meeting late.
4. The music was too loud for my ears.
Read the following sentences. Circle the prepositional phrases used in each sentence.

1. My neighbor, Mrs. Rosel, works as a teacher in a nearby day care center.

2. She goes to the day care center at 7 o’clock in the morning.

3. Mrs. Rosel’s house is just near the center, so she just goes there by foot.

4. Mrs. Rosel takes care of the children in the center with great pleasure and sincerity.

5. During recess, Mrs. Rosel accompanies the children.
