Structures for Architecture Students
Current approach.

1) The course content and pedagogy is like how a civil

engineering students are taught with an intent to
make them qualified engineer.
2) It is more detailed formula rather that understanding
of the structural concept.
3) It is more part to whole approach where structural
elements (e.g. Column, beam, etc) are isolated and
discussed in detail.
4) The modes of study is by mathematical represented
by line diagrams rather than three dimensional
physical objects.
5) Currently the courses taught by Engineering faculty.
Structures for Architecture Students
Proposed approach.

1) Emphasis on the need to study structures for Architecture Students.

2) It is not the purpose to make Architecture Students a fully qualified
structural engineer.
3) To develop informed intuition for structures by emphasizing underlying
concepts and synergy of form and structure and to encourage creative
design integration.
4) To convey material sufficiently rigorous for analyzing and design of
basic structures.
5) To convey enough information material for effective communication
with engineers on larger and complex projects. With the emphasis on
understanding the role of the structural engineer and the language and
terms that the structural engineer uses.
6) The modes of study is to first emphasis structural systems and later its
mathematical represented by diagrams.
7) It is more a whole to part approach where structural systems is
introduced first and later structural elements (e.g.. Column, beam, etc)
are isolated and discussed in detail.
8) Proposed to by taught jointly by Engineering faculty and Architecture
Design Studio faculty. Especially the higher level courses.
