Analytical Exposition

Expository text is a text that conveys fact and opinion about a


topic. One form of expository text is analytical exposition.
Analytical exposition is a text that elaborates the writer’s idea
about an issue.
It aims to persuade the readers to adopt the position taken by
the writer.
It consists of a statement of position(thesis). arguments, and
reiteration or conclusion.
Definition of analytical exposition text.
Linguistically, "analytical" means, "examining or
liking to examine things very carefully“.

While the meaning of exposition is


"a comprehensive explanation/description“.

So, the definition of analytical Exposition is text


that tries to give a comprehensive explanation of a
problem by presenting support opinions.
The social function of analytical exposition
is to convince/persuade the readers that an
issue/topic presented is important to discuss.

The generic structure of analytical exposition text


consist of :
1. Thesis/Introduction
2. Arguments
3. Reiteration/Conclusion
THESIS/INTRODUCTION
Introduces the topic and shows speaker or writer’s
position. Outlines of the arguments are presented.

In this part of the thesis, the writer must tell the reader
about the main topic he is going to write about.
The thesis can usually be found in the first paragraph
of the text.
ARGUMENTS
It consists about Point and Elaboration.
- Point : states the main argument
- Elaboration: develops and supports each point of
argument

The writer will write an opinion to support the main


topic that has been presented previously. Usually in
analytical exposition there are more than two
arguments. The more arguments presented, the
more readers will believe that the topic discussed is
an important topic or requires attention.
REITERATION/CONCLUSION
It restates writer's position.
This section is always located at the end of the text
and becomes the closing paragraph of the article.
Reiteration contains reaffirmation of the writer's
position and opinion on the main topic.
Text 1 :
Cars should be banned in the city. As we all know, cars create pollution, and cause a
lot of road deaths and other accidents. Thesis

Firstly, cars, as we all know, contribute to most of the pollution in the world. Cars
emit a deadly gas that causes illnesses such as bronchitis, lung cancer, and ‘triggers’
off asthma. Some of these illnesses are so bad that people can die from them. Argument 1

Secondly, the city is very busy. Pedestrians wander everywhere and cars commonly
hit pedestrians in the city, which causes them to die. Cars today are our roads

biggest killers.

Thirdly, cars are very noisy. If you live in the city, you may find it hard to sleep at
night, or concentrate on your homework, and especially talk to someone. Argument 3

In conclusion, cars should be banned from the city for the reasons listed. Reiteration
The language features of analytical exposition texts are as follows:
1. Writing analytical exposition text using simple present tense.
because the exposition text is a text that conveys general
opinions and is a fact.

2. Using thinking verbs/words that express the author's thoughts


or feelings, for example: experience,feel,know, realize,
sense, think, etc.

3. Using internal conjunctions, namely connecting words that


connect arguments between two clauses. Internal conjunctions
can be divided into four categories, namely:
(1) addition, for example: besides, in addition, moreover, further.
(2) Comparison, e.g : but, vice versa, meanwhile, on the other
hand, however.
(3) Time, for example the words second, then, next.
(4) Cause and effect.
for examples : consequence, as a result, so, because, due to.
Read the jumbled paragraphs below.

Thirdly, reading can give us pleasure, too. When we are tired, we read books,
newspaper or magazine on the entertainment column such as comedy, short story,
quiz, etc. to make us relax.
From the facts above, it’s obvious that everyone needs to read to get knowledge,
information and also entertainment. Or in summary we can say reading is truly
important in our life
Firstly, by reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the world
such as Science, technology. Sports, arts, culture, etc written in either books,
magazine, newspaper, etc.
The last, reading can also take us to other parts of the world. By reading a book
about Papua we may feel we’re really sitting in the jungles not at home in our
rooms.
I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why do I say
so?
Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about something
happening in any parts of the world which can we see directly.
COMPETENCE TEST

1. Rearrange the jumbled paragraphs into the correct


order.
2. Determine the generic structure of the text above.
3. Determine the social function of the text above.
4. Determine the language features/elements
of texts by finding out;
a. Thinking verbs
b. Internal conjunction
