QUALITY MANAGEMENT

PHILOSOPHIES
THE DEMING PHILOSOPHY

• Dr. W. Edwards Deming, a renowned physicist and statistician,

significantly impacted quality management. Despite being
ignored by US managers, he was invited to Japan after WWII
to teach statistical quality control. His ideas focused on top
management leadership, customer/supplier partnerships, and
continuous improvement in product development and
manufacturing processes.
DEMING’S 14 POINTS

Point 2: Learn the New Philosophy

Point 3: Understand Inspection

Point 4: Stop Making Decisions Purely on the Basis of Cost

Point 5: Improve Constantly and Forever

• Point 7: Institute Leadership
Point 8: Drive Out Fear

Point 9: Optimize the Efforts of Teams

Point 10: Eliminate Exhortation

Point 11: Eliminate Numerical Quotas and Management by

Objective (MBO)

4. Psychology
THE JURAN PHILOSOPHY

• Joseph M. Juran, born in Romania in 1912, joined Western

Electric in the 1920s and played a significant role in
developing statistical quality methods. He wrote and edited
the Quality Control Handbook, a comprehensive quality
manual, and taught quality principles to Japanese
organizations in the 1950s.
THE CROSBY PHILOSOPHY

• Philip B. Crosby, former corporate vice president for quality at

ITT, established Philip Crosby Associates in 1979 to develop
training programs and authored popular books, including
Quality Is Free, which influenced top US corporate managers.
His quality philosophy is embodied in the Absolutes of Quality
Management.
COMPARING DEMING, JURAN AND
CROSBY

• Deming, Juran, and Crosby’s philosophies are similar in their

focus on quality, top management commitment, continuous
improvement, customer relationships, and organizational
culture change. However, organizations must understand
their unique culture and develop tailored approaches that
incorporate elements from all three philosophies, as each can
be highly effective by itself.
A.V. FEIGENBUM

• Armand V. Feigenbaum, a quality expert, served as the

manager of worldwide manufacturing and quality control at
General Electric for 10 years. He founded General Systems
Company and served as its president and CEO until his death.
Feigenbaum was the founding chairman of the International
Academy of Quality, which includes the European
Organization for Quality Control, the Union of Japanese
Scientists and Engineers, and the American Society for
Quality.
FEIGENBAUM’S PHILOSOPHY IS
SUMMARIZED IN HIS THREE STEPS
TO QUALITY:
1. Quality Leadership

2. Modern Quality Technology

3. Organizational Commitment
KAORU ISHIKAWA

played a pivotal role in developing the country’s quality
strategy, ensuring its worldwide success and acclaim.
