• Venom – a poisonous liquid that some snakes and spiders
produce.
Insects can sometimes bite or sting us, most of the times bites or
stings are not too serious and will get better within a few hours or
days.

The following are signs and symptoms of insect stings and bites:

Research: The difference between a bite
and a sting.
• Apply a cold compress (such as a cloth cooled with cold water) or an ice
pack to any swelling for 10 minutes.
• Raise or elevate the affected area, if possible, as this can help reduce
swelling.
• Avoid scratching the area or bursting any blisters, to reduce the risk of
infection.

Emergency care for stings and bites; removing a sting
If you have been stung and the sting has been left in your
skin, you should remove it as soon as possible to prevent
any more venom (poisonous liquid) being released.

When to get emergency help
Call for an ambulance immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms of a severe reaction;
• Difficulty swallowing.
• Loss of consciousness.
