Dear Lord,
May we through Your guidance. Add love to
the world, subtract evils from our lives. Multiply Your good works to your children and divide Your gifts and share them to others. Give us the power to overcome challenges and root out the bad things in our hearts. This we pray in the name of Mary our mother and Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen 1. Heredity
Inborn traits passes on by the
generations of offsprings from both sides of the biological parent’s families HUMAN DEVELOPMENT is influenced by: KNOWING ONESELF Defining the “Self” • Is the essence of a person: his thoughts, feelings and actions, experiences, beliefs, values, principles, and relationships. • Includes a person’s life purpose, meaning, and aspirations. SELF-AWARENESS • Is how an individual consciously know and understand his or her own character, feelings, motives, and desires. • When you know yourself better, you are more confident and creative, and you can maximize your potentials to reach your goals. WAYS ON HOW YOU CAN DEVELOP SELF- AWARENESS: 1. Identify your emotions. Realizing the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behavior allows you to deal with them and respond effectively when they arise. 2. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses. 3. Keeping a journal or diary. You can track what is happening in your life in a daily basis. 4. Practice mindfulness. Is being able to be fully present and aware of what you are doing and where you are at a particular moment, without reacting to much or being overwhelm. UNDERSTANDING SELF-CONCEPT
• According to Carl Rogers, a humanist
psychologist, self-concept is one’s idea about himself/herself, particularly towards his/her unique personality and own perception about his/her set of values, point of views, and behavior. TWO CATEGORIES OF SELF-CONCEPT: IDEAL SELF AND ACTUAL SELF • The ideal self is the person that you would like to be. • The ideal self is the idealized image you have developed overtime. It could come from experiences, environment, learning from your parents, and characteristics of your role model. • The actual self/real self is who you really are. It is your real self that you see every day. • If your real self is far from the idealized image/ideal self, then you might feel dissatisfied with your life and might consider yourself a failure. • Additionally, self-esteem is a feeling of value or worth that you have about yourself. Just how you see yourself, so do others. It is easy to feel good about yourself when you have a healthy sense of self-worth. When you do not feel good about yourself, you are less likely to appreciate your thoughts and opinions and you are more likely to have low self-esteem. IDENTIFYING STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES • Every person has his/her own strengths and weaknesses. As part of self-awareness, you should be able to identify these strengths and weaknesses and use them to reach your potentials and future goals. • A strength is an activity that makes you feel strong or something you are good at. • A weaknesses is a particular thing or activity that you do not like doing or you find hard to master. Meanwhile, you can improve your weaknesses by doing something about them. How would you able to do it? • Remember, turning your weakness into strength helps maximize your potential, increase self-esteem, and enables you to have a better appreciation of yourself. EMBRACING ADOLESCENCE • Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood. It includes some big changes in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional aspects. It may include changes on how you look, how you take responsibility, how you decide on your own, and how you viewed yourself. • Your experiences since childhood shape your unique characteristics and habits that define who you are.
