INTRODUCTION
Mental health refers to a person's emotional,
psychological, and social well-being, affecting how
they think, feel, and act. It also influences how
individuals handle stress, relate to others, and make
choices.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines
mental health as "a state of well-being in which every
individual realizes his or her own potential can cope
with the normal stresses of life, can work productively
and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to his or her 1

TYPES OF MENTAL
I. Mood Disorders
ILLNESS
1.Major Depressive Disorder
• A severe form of depression that affects daily functioning, characterized by
persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in previously
enjoyed activities.
1.Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
• A chronic form of depression that lasts for at least two years, with symptoms
less severe than major depression but still impactful.
1. Bipolar Disorder (includes Bipolar I and Bipolar II)
• A mental illness characterized by extreme mood swings, including emotional
highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
1.Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

• A type of depression that occurs at specific times of the year, typically during
the winter months when sunlight exposure is reduced

II. Anxiety Disorders ILLNESS
1.Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
• Excessive and uncontrollable worry about various aspects of life, often
accompanied by physical symptoms like restlessness and fatigue.
1. Panic Disorder
• Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks, which are sudden periods of intense fear
or discomfort, often leading to ongoing worry about future attacks.

• An intense fear of social situations where one might be judged or embarrassed,
leading to avoidance of such situations.

III. Psychotic Disorder
1.Schizophrenia

perception, emotions, language, and sense of self, often involving
hallucinations and delusions.
1.Schizoaffective Disorder
• A condition that includes symptoms of schizophrenia and mood
disorder symptoms (either depressive or manic).
1.Brief Psychotic Disorder
• A short-term period of psychotic behavior, often triggered by stress,
lasting less than a month.

IV. Personality Disorder

1.Borderline Personality Disorder
• A disorder characterized by unstable moods, behavior, and
relationships, often leading to impulsivity and emotional instability.
1.Antisocial Personality Disorder
• A pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others, often
involving deceit and manipulation.
1.Narcissistic Personality Disorder
• A disorder marked by an inflated sense of self-importance, a need for
excessive admiration, and a lack of empathy for others.

• A pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and

Disorders

1.Anorexia Nervosa
• An eating disorder characterized by self-starvation, extreme weight
loss, and an intense fear of gaining weight.

vomiting or excessive exercise, to prevent weight gain.
