1.2 Comparing_and_ordering

The document focuses on the concepts of comparing and ordering numbers, emphasizing the importance of digit value in determining which number is greater or lesser. It provides examples for ordering numbers from least to greatest and vice versa, along with guidelines for comparing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Additionally, it includes links to videos for further learning and practice exercises to reinforce the concepts.

1.2 Comparing
and Ordering
The only way to learn mathematics is
to do mathematics. – Paul Halmos
Objective
s
• Compare numbers by looking at the value of
each digit turn.
• Use the symbols of less than and greater than
when comparing two numbers.
• Order numbers from smallest to greatest and
from greatest to smallest.
 Comparing and ordering numbers
Key words:
*ordering numbers: is putting
numbers in specific order; either
from the least to the greatest or
the greatest to the least
Example:
-> 1, 3, 7, 9, 11 is listed from the
least to the greatest.
-> 11, 9, 7, 3, 1 is listed from the
greatest to the least.

Remember in comparing in 2-digit numbers:
first -> compare tens, a number with more tens is greater than a number
with a fewer tens.
T U
6 tens is more
6 3 than 3 units, so
63 is greater
7 3 than 36, and
36 is less than
63.
Remember in comparing in 3-digit numbers:
first -> compare hundreds, a number with more hundreds is greater
than a number with a fewer hundreds.

8 hundreds is more
than 7 hundreds, so
872 is greater than
782, and 782 is less
than 872.
What if …
both numbers have the
same number of
hundreds ?
01
Remember in comparing if both numbers have
the same number of hundreds, so we must
compare tens, and if they are the same in
hundreds and tens , then we compare units.
8 tens is more than 7
tens, so 782is greater
than 772, and 772is
less than 782.
Note:
represents equivalence, whatever
written is written each side of the equals sign has the
same value.

Example:
20+2 24-2
22 22
643 458 458
643

475 472 472

475

883 838 838
