EINC-report-chn

Essential Intrapartum Newborn Care (EINC) is a set of evidence-based practices aimed at improving newborn health outcomes and reducing mortality rates during the first hour of life. The protocol, mandated by the DOH in December 2009, emphasizes immediate and thorough drying, early skin-to-skin contact, properly timed cord clamping, and non-separation of mother and baby. EINC eliminates unnecessary interventions to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and newborn.

INTRAPARTUM AND
NEWBORN CARE
EINC

Essential Intrapartum Newborn Care (EINC) is a package of

evidence-based practices recommended by the DOH and
WHO, which is the standard of care in all births by skilled
attendants in all govrenment and private hospitals.

It constitute a series of time-bound,

chronologically ordered, standard procedures
that a bay receives at birth.
Essential
Intrapartum EINC aims to prevent at least half
of newborn death without
additional cost to both families

and Newborn and hospitals.

EINC focuses on the first hour of

Care life of the newborn.

EINC or Unang Yakap campaign,

launched on December 9, 2009
In december 2009, the secretary of the DOH,
Francisco Dudue signed Administrative Order 2009-
0025 which mandate implementation of the EINC
protocol in both public and private hospital.
Unnecessary Interventions
Eliminated
• Fluid and food intake restrictions
• Fundal pressure to facilitate second stage
of labor is no longer practiced, because it
resulted to maternal and newborn injuries
and death.
• Early bathing of the newborn
• Application of various substances to the
cord.
• Giving pre-lacteals or artificial infant milk
formula or other breast-milk substitute.

Properly timed cord clamping and
cutting of cord

• Clamp the cord after cord pulsations have stopped (typically at 1-

3 minutes after expulsion of the baby.
• Put clamp around the cord 3cm away from the baby’s abdomen
and another one 5 cm away from the babys abdomen.
• Cut the cord near the first cord clamp.
• Observe for oozing blood.
• After cord clamping ensure oxytocin IM is given to the mother.
