CLASS 10 EXERCISE 5.3
EXAMPLE FOR
EXERCISE 5.3
Question 1
How many terms of the AP : 24, 21, 18, . . . must be taken so
that their sum is 78?
Here, a = 24, d = 21 – 24 = –3, = 78. We need to find n.
We know that = (2a+(n-1)d)
So, 78 = = (51-3n)
or – 51n + 156 = 0
or – 17n + 52 = 0
or (n – 4)(n – 13) = 0
or n = 4 or 13
Both values of n are admissible. So, the number of terms is either 4 or
13.
Question 2
Find the sum of first 24 terms of the list of numbers whose nth
term is given by = 3 + 2n
As = 3 + 2n,
so, = 3 + 2 = 5
=3+2×2=7
=3+2×3=9
List of numbers becomes 5, 7, 9, 11, . . .
Here, 7 – 5 = 9 – 7 = 11 – 9 = 2 and so on.
So, it forms an AP with common difference d = 2.
To find , we have n = 24, a = 5, d = 2.
Therefore, = (2) = 12(10+46) = 672.
So, sum of first 24 terms of the list of numbers is 672.

Hence, the correct answer is option C.
a11 = 22
Hence, the answer is option B
Question 2 Find the sum of the following APs.
(i) 2, 7, 12 ,…., to 10 terms.
(ii) − 37, − 33, − 29 ,…, to 12 terms
(iii) 0.6, 1.7, 2.8 ,…….., to 100 terms
(iv) 1/15, 1/12, 1/10, …… , to 11 terms
(i) Given here, (ii) Given here,
A.P. = 10, 7, 4, … A.P. = -3, -, ,2 …
Therefore, we can find, Therefore, we can find,
First term, a = 10 First term a = – 3
Common difference, d = a2 − a1 = 7−10 Common difference, d = a2 − a1 = (-) -(-3)⇒(-) + 3 =
=
As−3we know, for an A.P.,
As we know, for an A.P.,
an = a +(n−1)d
an = a+(n−1)d
Putting the values; Putting the values;
a30 = 10+(30−1)(−3) a11 = -3+(11-1)()
a30 = 10+(29)(−3) a11 = -3+(10)()
a30 = 10−87 = −77 a11 = -3+25
Hence, the correct answer is option C.
