• I’ve been a firsthand witness to the
benefits of medical marijuana
• Cannabis can be effective in helping
mitigate chronic pain
• Cancer patients

place of strong, highly addictive prescription
drugs currently used in the medical field
• The more research on cannabis in modern
health fields, the better the output and
effects on people facing severe pain due to
medical issues
History of Cannabis in
Healthcare

• Ancient physicians began mixing cannabis into


medicines to treat pain and other ailments
• In the 19th century, cannabis began being used
for therapeutic uses
• Since the 19th century, several advancements
have been made to how the drug is
administered
• William O’Shughnessy, an Irish doctor was the
first to popularize medical marijuana in
England and America
Essential Information

• Marijuana is more powerful today than it was 30 years ago


• The average THC levels rose from less than 1% in the mid-1970s to
8.5% in 2008

• Cannabis has been used since early times – the first


recording was around 2700 BCE
• Used primarily for pain relief – sometimes even for childbirth pains!
• Other uses include seeds for animal feed and fiber for hemp rope

• As of February 2024, medical marijuana is legal in 47 states


• Idaho, Nebraska, and Kansas do not recognize marijuana in any form

Success Story

A Florida women was unable to function in her daily life due to joint pains.
After several trials with different medications, she decided to try CBD/THC.
Her life was turned upside down and she could finally sleep, lose weight she
had gained due to her inability to move, and was finally able to live her life
pain-free again – something she couldn’t imagine doing after years of pain.

Florida does not currently allow recreational marijuana use.

Marcos was a child suffering from seizures beginning at four years old. The
medications prescribed by doctors gave extreme reactions, causing him to throw
himself against walls and act out. Marcos was eventually diagnosed with a rare form
of epilepsy. After a wide range of research, the family decided to give CBD a try in
hopes of curing their son. Living in Florida, they could not gain permission from
doctors to try medical marijuana on a child. After several years of trying, the family
finally tried medical marijuana for their son, changing his life forever. His seizures
completely stopped and his EEG began improving.

Because of medical marijuana, Marcos can begin living a normal life without the fear
of having a severe seizure.

Health Risks

• Increased risk of car accidents in intoxicated users


• Children can be put at risk if they unknowingly consume marijuana
• Adults over 65 have an increased risk of injury while using medical marijuana
• Other short-term effects:
• Impaired memory
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Increased heart rate
• Slower reaction times
• Hallucinations

topic in modern culture as it
becomes more accepted across
states and discussed in politics
• Modern media heavily influences
cannabis views in today’s culture
• Medical marijuana is increasingly

Recommendations for the
Future

• Focus on optimizing cannabinoid therapy based on each patient’s genetic


makeup
• Offer a wide range of delivery methods for CBD/THC products to appeal to
more patients (edible, topical, vapor, etc.)
• Introduce cannabis to mainstream health as an alternative to other
prescription drugs (opioids) that are more addictive
• Educate the public on the potential uses of medical marijuana
• Conduct long-term studies to better understand the effects of cannabis
over time and its impact on health issues
