ARBT 03..intro to bldg. system

The document provides an overview of building systems, defining them as coordinated sets of elements designed to meet specific performance specifications. It discusses various components such as structure, exterior envelopes, HVAC, and lighting, detailing types of foundations, including shallow and deep foundations. Additionally, it covers the importance of HVAC for indoor comfort and the role of lighting in achieving aesthetic effects.

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY 03

Introduction to Building System…

Building
Technology…
A Building System is defined as a coordinated set of elements intended
to achieve a clearly defined performance specification employed to address
a specific goal. The basic components…

STRUCTURE; EXTERIOR ENVELOPES; HVAC; LIGHTING

STRUCTURE…
Refers to anything that is constructed or built from different interrelated parts
with a fixed location on the ground. A body of connected parts that is designed
to bear loads…

Post & Beam

STRUCTURE…
Subgrade / Foundation
Super Structure

Subgrade / Foundation
Part of the structure that transfers the load from the structure constructed on it
as well as its weight over a large area of soil in such a way that the amount
does not exceed the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil and the settlement of
the whole structure remains within a tolerable limit.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Shallow Foundation
• Deep foundation

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Shallow Foundation
Isolated Spread Footing
The most economical type. Typically utilized for shallow establishments to
convey and spread concentrated burdens caused, for instance, by pillars or
columns. Used for ordinary buildings (Typically up to five stories)

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Shallow Foundation
Wall Footing or Strip footing
Also known as continuous footing, is used to distribute loads of structural or
non- structural load-bearing walls to the ground. It runs along the direction
of the wall. The width is usually 2-3 times the width of the wall.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Shallow Foundation
Combined Footing
Similar to the isolated footing. When their footing overlap each
other, combined footing is provided.

• Shallow Foundation
Cantilever / Strap Footing
Strap footings are similar to combined footings the foundation under the
columns is built individually and connected by a strap beam.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS

Mat / Raft Foundation
Raft foundation consists of a reinforced concrete slab or T-beam slab placed
over the entire area of the structure. The total load of the structure is spread
evenly over the entire area of the structure. Called a raft because, in this
case, the building seems like a vessel that floats on a sea of soil

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Deep Foundation
Pile Foundation
Pile is a slender member with a small cross-sectional area compared to its
length. It is used to transmit foundation loads to a deeper soil or rock strata
when the bearing capacity of soil near the surface is relatively low.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Deep Foundation
Pier Foundation
is a cylindrical structural member that transfer heavy load from
superstructure to the soil by end bearing. Unlike piles, it can only transfer
load by bearing and by not skin friction.

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS
• Deep Foundation
Caisson Foundation
A watertight retaining structure used as a bridge pier, construction of the dam,
etc. Generally used in structures that require foundation beneath a river or
similar water bodies. This can be floated to the desired location and then sunk
into place.

Super Structure
Superstructure
The superstructure is the
portion of a building which is
constructed above the
ground level. It includes columns, beams, slab upwards including all finishes,
door and window schedules, flooring, roofing, lintels, and parapets…

EXTERIOR ENVELOPES…
relates to design and construction of the exterior of the house. The building
envelope of a house consists of its roof, sub floor, exterior doors, windows
and exterior walls.

HVAC…(Heating Ventilating & Air Conditioning

is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. Its goal is
to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.

LIGHTING…
is the deliberate use of light to achieve practical or aesthetic effects. Lighting
includes the use of both artificial light sources like lamps and light fixtures, as
well as natural illumination by capturing daylight. Daylighting (using
windows, skylights, or light shelves) is sometimes used as the main source of
light during daytime in buildings.
